Now that I'm back from Ireland, I find myself craving some of the foods I got to enjoy over there. Is there a website that sells irish grocery products that you could recommend. I know it is illegal to ship irish meats like rashers and puddings to the US, but is there a place to get my hands on them? Also, brown bread, candy, etc. I brought back some good stuff with me, but it is going fast.
Shawn, Michele has posted Mary Browne's recipe for Irish brown bread on one of these topics...can't remember which topic though!
Where do you live? Here in San diego there is an Irish pub called The Field, and my husband and I enjoyed our first visit there, since we were missing Ireland as well. They do have Irish breakfasts there. The pub was actually shipped piece by piece from Ireland.
We live in CT, where there is a pretty good irish representation. We have a couple of good irish pubs. One of them, opened by a Dubliner, is very authentic and consists of furniture and a bar imported from Ireland. They serve very good food and drink, and offer breakfast on the weekends. I'd like to buy some stuff to occasionally have at home though.
I have a lot of food websites bookmarked, however my computer is currently in the shop having data transferred from my dying hard drive to a new one. Hopefully in a couple of days I should have access to my lists again. Stay tuned.
Here is a good one http://www.foodireland.com/ Also just before Christmas Galtee does there direct from Ireland sale at galteeirishbreakfast.com (i think). That is the best seal for the best product. I usually stock up for the year.
I've placed several orders from them--usually for brown bread. :) (I have several receipes that I keep meaning to try, but it's just so much easier to buy it already made. :) ) I've also ordered soda bread, Tayto-brand cheese and onion crisps and diet Orange Club. The coffee mug I use at work was purchased from their site. They also used to sell some Irish newspapers and magazines, and I bought a few of those as well. I've been pleased with their delivery and customer service.
Thank you VERY much for this web site. We leave in October for a two week stay and I KNOW we will want some of the things we enjoyed while in Ireland. We live in Oregon, anybody know where a good place to eat in Portland may be?
Thanks!
Youngka

Thanks for the links to food sites! And they have Club Lemon!! I'm not into orange soda, but loved the Club Lemon. Also loved the little individually-wrapped toffee muffins that were is many of the small newstand/convenience stores in Dublin, but haven't found any place to get those ......
Willie and/or Michele --- when you've ordered brown soda bread from foodireland, did you eat it right away like they recommend or did you re-freeze some of it (they say it was flash-frozen before it shipped from Ireland, so it's already been frozen once)?
I did pick up a couple loaves of fresh brown soda bread at Dublin airport to bring home --- guess those days are gone for awhile, with all the restrictions in place ....
Sorry, I have not ordered the bread. I either make my own (using Mary Browne's recipe), make a trip to Ireland or invite my Irish friends to visit me (and bring some bread of course!).
Maybe you could try it with a small portion and see what happens. Or else email them for info.
Had to smile at your reply, Michele --- for a moment I had this image of you saying to your husband "I'm going to run to the store to get some bread" and then boarding a plane for Ireland (nobody said which store, right?!)
Decided to follow your lead so I am currently munching on a piece of Mary Browne's bread --- well, her recipe anyways. It's terrific, Michele; thanks for sharing it with us! It was quick and easy to make, too.
You never know I just might pop over to Ireland for a shopping trip to Tesco's or Dunne's! Actually a couple of years ago some of my Irish friends brought a whole suitcase of food from Ireland. What a great gift! Needless to say, it was quickly emptied and went back to Ireland full of American stuff.
Another thought that has not been brought up regarding purchasing Irish foods. Do you have an Irish Import shop nearby? They will usually carry quite a bit of imported foods, like Taytos and candies. Also, a couple of them here in San Diego and L.A. area also carry Irish sausages, Rashers, Scottish meat pies (mmmm). If there is no place close, then if you have any Irish festivals, there are usually booths set up by the import shops that sell such things (they don't usually bring the meats though). Also, if you don't want to make brown bread from scratch, I tried a brown bread mix that I found in Major Market. I forget the brand but you only add water and bake. It was pretty darn good for one of those instant things. Soda bread is so easy to make, I just make my own when I am in the mood.
