We took our trip to Ireland back in April. Unfortunately when we were leaving (I was not feeling well and not at my most clearheaded) I forgot to have my VAT forms stamped by customs at the Shannon airport (realized it after we'd taken off!). I figured it didn't really amount to a huge amount of money that I'd get back because a couple of the places didn't charge me the VAT anyhow and the ones that did, it amounted to maybe about $20. So I put it out of my mind, wrote it off figuring there wasn't anything I could do about it and $20 wasn't worth getting stressed over.
On my credit card statement this past month there was a charge for 'Moneyback Tax Recharge' (charge@dis.ie). Am I being charged this because I didn't send in the VAT refund forms? Wanted to check with you on this before I call the credit card company and question it.
I believe a "recharge" occurs when you don't submit a VAT form for a purchase that deducted the tax when you purchased it. For example, we bought a bunch of sweaters at the Woolen Mills market where they took off the tax at the store. We still had to fill out a VAT form even though we were not looking for a tax refund at the airport. They told us that if we did not submit the VAT form for the sweaters, we would get recharged for our tax when we got home.
It sounds like that is what happened...hope that helps,
Shawn is right. Many shops deduct the tax right away. If you do not turn in the forms at the airport you will see in on your credit card a month or so later. I'm sure that is what the charge is.
Did you know that you can mail the forms back to Ireland when you return home? However, you must get a notarized letter saying that you have completed your trip and returned to your country of origin. You have about 6 weeks from your return date to do that.
Thanks for the info! Yes, that is what it is then. I remember for sure that the Guinness gift shop at the Storehouse deducted the VAT at the point of sale. Ah well, since the 6 weeks are way gone and it wasn't a huge amount to begin with, I'll consider it a contribution to the Irish tax fund! But I won't make the same mistake of forgetting to turn in the VAT forms on future trips!!
