Hi everyone.. new here! I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice. I'm in the beginning stages of planning my first trip to Ireland!
A friend and myself would like to travel to Ireland in a few years (probably 2008). I've been looking online, and bought a few books, but I'm just not sure what would be right for us. We'll both be students then, and while money will be tight, it shouldn't be restrictively so if we save like we intend to. We'll probably have to go in the Summer because of school schedules (most likely between June and August.) We aren't sure yet how long we'd be able to stay, but at least a week.
Does anyone have some adivce on where to stay, what to see that can't be missed, and some places that might not be too crowded? We'd like to find a less expensive B&B, but would be open to Hostels as well. We won't be able to rent a car (if the age to do so is 24 like I've heard), so any day or several-day tours would be considered as well.
Any help would be much appreciated, as neither of us have been to Ireland (or overseas) before. Thank you very much!!
It's easier to help if your interests are better understood. As college students, are you interested in lively nightlife and pubs? Or are you more interested in hiking, historical sites, or . . .
While we might want a few nights 'out on the town', we're also interested in historical sights, castles, and generally great scenery... things we won't be able to find just anywhere.
My husband and I are leaving for our first trip in 3 weeks! I had asked for info regarding certain areas to see also.
Bill wrote and suggested: "Don't miss the drive up and over the Pass of Keimaneigh and Gougane Barra. Loop on the back roads to Kenmare and then back down over Caha Pass." We will be staying in a cottage near the area he described and we decided we will add it to our list of things to do. We are staying in cottages - 1 in Galway and 1 near Cork. We will be there for 2 weeks. When my son and his girlfriend went over, they were VERY short on money and did a lot of traveling by bus and train, they were in the Dublin area for 1 week. They said it was fairly easy and they were just very careful on how much they spent on their meals. They did not try the hostels, however, stayed in a hotel on the canal in Dublin - the four seasons, I think. Please do buy Michelle's book, very good reference tool....... Also, have Michelle send you a "plan" or send an email to 12travel.com, they have good specials that may "catch your eye".
GOOD LUCK and I know you will have a good time, eventho we have not left yet.....

Welcome to the forum. You have a lot of time for planning, which is good since you will be able to gather a lot of info to make your trip easier. Since you are using public transportation, click on IrelandYes Index and then on Transport. There you will find links to Irish bus and rail sites. You can check routes, schedules, etc.
If you have the option of June or August, try for June as there are usually less tourists then. In August things will be hopping.
Try to spend a few days at a time in strategic areas from which you can take day tour bus trips. Some to consider are Dublin, Killarney, Galway, Cork, Limerick.
I suggest you take a good look around my website. On my Sightseeing page I have my Ireland Top 10 List. On my Links page you can click through to hostels and B&Bs. My Lodgings page has good recommendations for accommodations. My Getting Started page will jump start your trip.
That should get you started. I'm sure you will have more questions as your trip becomes a reality.
