I just want to introduce myself, as I will no doubt be asking you all a lot of questions in the upcoming months. I have 2 daughters, 18 (Kasey) and 24 (Keely), and we decided to take a Women's Journey before they go on and have families of their own. After considering several destinations, I decided Ireland was a good choice. I was raised by an Irish mother (Creevy, Donegal), and the last time I was there I was 3 years old. 50 years ago! Well, the more I read your forum, the more convinced I am that my choice of Ireland is perfect. I feel like the angels were looking down on me when I found your site. I have purchased your book, Michele, and I know it will be a great help. I plan on taking your advice and waiting until mid-December to purchase the tickets for a late May, early June 2007 trip. Meanwhile, I will keep reading and taking notes!
What a wonderful opportunity for the 3 of you to travel together. Perhaps you will be starting a tradition of mother and daughters spending time together as adults.
Michele and so many others will be of great assistance on this site. Are you considering returning to County Donegal on the trip? It is a truly wonderful part of the country.
Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you are planning a memorable trip for yourself and your daughters. Ireland is an easy and safe place for women to travel. I'm sure you will be heading up to Donegal since your mother was from there. It is a lovely part of the country that not that many tourists make it to. Let us know if you have any other questions.
Welcome to the forum. You and your daughters are in for a great experience. You've definitely come to the right place. Everyone on the board is always ready to travel and plan a trip to Ireland vicariously through you and your questions and ideas.
Marie, what a great idea for a trip! You and your daughters will fondly remember this trip. I especially enjoyed traveling to Belfast area in Northern Ireland with my daughters, because my favorite Irish grandmother grew up there.
If you are going up to Donegal (I think you should), on the way up, if it's convenient, you might consider a stop in Westport, County Mayo. A great town, with Irish music, and County Mayo is peaceful and has lovely scenery like Achill Island. Also Westport is a nice size for walking and shopping.
My daughters and I enjoy what we call getting away for some "WomPow"...that's Woman Power! We love a WomPow weekend.
Our trip to Ireland was a family trip...my husband and I and our 2 daughters. (Our son couldn't come.)
Yes! I am planning to go to Donegal. My mother grew up outside Ballyshannon. I read how much many members have enjoyed Westport, so I will take your advice! My biggest worry is that we will miss something spectacular, or that we will try to do too much. We'll be there for 2 weeks. I really want to see Newgrange, and I know that's clear on the other side. I am working on putting together an itinerary that won't have us rushing around, but that will include not to be missed places. Thanks, and I will have lots more questions for all of you.
Marie, I am excited for you and when you return you can tell us all about Donegal...I want to go there on my next trip to Ireland...we didn't get that far northwest on this trip.
I too worried about having the right balance between including enough must-see places, and not rushing around too much. I worried my eyebrows off about whether it was okay to leave Dublin and Newgrange and Rock of Cashel out of our first trip. But as soon as we stepped on Irish soil, the sights and sounds and tastes of real Ireland filled our senses, and we had absolutely no sense of regret for those "left out" places...they sort of faded into ghosts...
If I had to plan our first trip over, if I had to change something, I wouldn't fit more in...instead I would have taken more out!
