I am traveling to Ireland flying into Shannon in November, going to a town called Ballinrobe in County Mayo, I read that you have to tell the car rentals how to charge you, if I made the reservation through Thrifty Car Rental on thier site, should I even worry about what currency they will be charging me with or do I have to tell them there?
I have started using Auto Europe for my car rentals, http://www.autoeurope.com/. I have found their prices quite reasonable. All rates are guaranteed in US dollars. They do charge you up front when you make a reservation for half and then request the other half a month before you are scheduled to pick up the car. I found this to be one less worry I had to have while traveling through Ireland. The staff was very friendly at the airport in Shannon. The paperwork was quickly dispatched. The return was just as efficient.
Try this map site. Once you bring the site up click on 'Driving Directions' and type in your leaving point and destination. It will bring up a map and driving directions. Once you have that you can zoom in on Ballinrobe and get a more detailed map. You can print these maps and take them with you. We went through Ballinrobe, last month, on our way to the village of Cong where the 'Quiet Man' was filmed. This is a beautiful village in it's own right. Sorry but I can't remember much about Ballinrobe. Have a great trip. daffy
I have not rented a car through Thrifty so do not know if they will charge you in dollars or euros. If you booked through their site you can contact them to find out. I use Kemwel (from my car rental page) and the rates are in US dollars. Once I get to Ireland a few additional charges are needed and they are in euros. If you prefer to be charged in euros, just tell the agent when you arrive at the car rental desk. They should comply with your request.
I called and spoke with them recently, and they were very helpful. when you rent from them, you pay in dollars. They include most things you need. However, if you want the Super CDW, you have to pay that in Ireland, in euros.
As a place for information and help, try them and compare them to other companies you are thinking of using. This way you will know exactly what you are/are not getting for your money.
You can get an instant quote and/or speak with them on the phone. Their number is:Toll Free: 1-800-828-0826
I haven't personally rented from Dooley since they are usually more expensive for my needs. I have rented from National, Europcar and Kemwel in the past 10 years and have been happy with them. Recently Kemwel has had the best rates for me as I rent the smallest manual car. However, I suggest shopping around, getting quotes from at least 6 companies, comparing the same car, insurance, etc. with each one and taking your lowest rate.
