Going to Ireland next year, and already friends have began to ask to me bring back a liter or so of their favorite Irish whiskey. All well and good, and I'd be happy to oblige, but what am I allowed to bring back -- duty free and otherwise -- and if I pay the duty on the item, how much basically are we talking about?
Can you have a liter in your checked bags that has been already opened?
Thanks. Great site and I'm glad to have found it for reference and conversation.
Welcome to the forum. How many friends do you have? Bringing whiskey home can be a heavy job. Airlines have weight restrictions on suitcases. You will want to find out what they are on your airline.
You can bring back one liter duty free into the USA. Otherwise, you pay around 10% in the US. See the website for customs in your country of origin.
You can pack opened liquor in checked baggage. I would be careful of spills and package it accordingly.
Thanks for the welcome. Seems one has more friends than expected when trips to Ireland are on the horizon! My plan would be to bring home probably four bottles, and I would guess the best plan would be to buy the contents at the duty free shop in Shannon and let them pack it, correct?
Looking forward to being on this site and seeing what people are saying. Great look and content. You are to be congratulated.
You will be surprised at how many friends you have when they discover you are planning a trip to Ireland! If you are departing from Shannon then the duty free shop is a good place to buy the whiskey. However, keep up to date on airline rules for what you can carry onboard since things are subject to change. Are you traveling back to the USA? If you are making a connection in the US you may have to re-pack your liquor into checked baggage. Check the TSA website: http://www.tsa.gov/
