Will be spending 8 days starting in mid-May on honeymoon. Never been to Europe. Already have round-trip ticket reservations arriving&departing from Dublin. Would like to spend a day or two in Dublin and the Newgrange area then the remaining time in the West country with an overnight stay on the Aran Islands. We'd like to concentrate the time within Counties Mayo, Galway and Clare. Is that too broad an area for the time? If so, how should we narrow it down? Also, would we base in one central location (e.g., Galway) and take excursions or find a B&B "on the fly" wherever we ended up at day's end?
Can we get a disposable cell phone in Ireland when arriving that we could use to call the B&B's en route? I'm told May isn't as busy as later so don't know whether we should make reservations or not. Is the cancellation policy usually 24 or 48 hours if we do prepay? Should we reserve our rental car now or wait until we arrive?
As we must make a round trip back to Dublin airport, what are 2 routes we could take to and from the West country that might include a good variety of scenery and history? I think we will sign up for Michele's itinerary service, in any case.
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your upcoming marriage and honeymoon in Ireland! With only eight days you will have to plan carefully for your short time in Ireland. Since you want two days in Dublin that will leave 6 for elsewhere. Also, two days will basically be used up with driving across the country from east to west and then back again.
Since you want an overnight on the Aran Islands you might be best off to concentrate on the Galway area, doing day trips from there.
Since it is your honeymoon and time is short, you should probably have a firm itinerary and reservations for B&Bs. Finding them on the fly is fine if you have the time. However, sometimes it can take a few hours to find the right one. You might prefer to spend your time sightseeing and enjoying Ireland rather than searching for lodgings. Each B&B, guesthouse and hotel in Ireland has their own cancellation policy.
Definitely reserve your car now. You will get your best rates by shopping around and booking online. Take a look at my "Car Rental" page for valuable info you need to know to be an informed consumer. Car rentals are tricky in Ireland so be sure to read it all. If you have any questions, let me know.
Your route back to Dublin will depend on where you spent the night before.
