Best Routes

Hi  My husband & I will visit Ireland in late april. We fly into Dublin via Heathrow from Australia.

Our plan is to head to the Cliffs of Moher. I  used AA route to get to Kinvara a 2hr 40 drive. However if you simply put in the cliffs AA takes you down to Ennis & back up. Is there a problem with route via Kinvara.

As we then need to get to Killarney after the Cliffs which is best >>> route through Limmerick or Kilrush & the ferry .

As my husband is an O'Driscoll we will also visiting Baltimore.

Fay,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on actually posting. You will get the hang of it and it will be second nature soon.

I do not recommend driving to Kinvara from Dublin after flying from Australia and via London!!! You will kill yourselves...or others.  Please don't do it. The drive time is more like 4 1/2 hours or more. You should really plan on staying pretty close to Dublin. Once you get a good night's rest you will be ready to face a long drive on the little Irish roads.

From Kinvara if you prefer the more scenic coastal route south you can get the car ferry across the Shannon from Killimer to Tarbert. If you prefer the main road you can go through Ennis and Limerick but may get tied up in traffic in both cities. Drive times are probably comparable when you factor in the ferry.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks ..that was my concern.

what if we head south to wards Baltimore.

Where would be best to satop? Kilkenny?

I think Cork/Blarney would also be too far.

After a flight that long, Kilkenny is as far I would go. You might want to sleep near Dublin. It's about two hours to Kilkenny if the traffic isn't bad in Dublin.

Fay,

I don't know how long  you have in Ireland or when you need to be in Baltimore but Kilkenny would be a good first night's stop. Another option would be going about an hour south to Glendalough.

Thanks

we fly in 10:20 am April 26 th & fly out early May 2nd.

I had thought to get back to Dublin late afternoon/evening on 30th & have all day 6th there.

The rest was open other than seeing Baltimore.

My original planning took me to Kilkenny first but then I tought I'd try the other route.

I am coming to the conclusion cliffs of Moher is too difficult.

I've also been told that the ring of Kerry is frequently fog enclosed.

Fay,

I suggest you decide what you want to see along the way to Baltimore and back. That will determine your route.

Get your map, your list of places you want to see and your calendar and get an itinerary going. Even if you don't stick to it entirely at least you will have a general idea and won't be totally at loose ends on your trip. Then tell us what you have in mind so we can offer suggestions and help.

The ROK can be fogged in but in all my trips there I have only seen that a couple of times.

Hi The point is we dont have a list.

Due to Irish heritage my husnamd wants to see Baltimore. A friend has said Cliffs are magnificent another has said Blarney was great. We have  planned a basic trip the problems now are apparently the driving times. I am not going to sit around somewhere from noon odd onwards waiting to have a sleep.

Fay,

You need to go to your local library or bookstore and get a couple of guidebooks about Ireland. Read them and make your list of what you want to do and see. It is all very well for others to suggest what they liked in Ireland but you may have other interests. The books will let you discover exactly what you want to see.
