We now have our travel dates set (yay!) for the last 2 weeks in September so I am looking at air travel. Continental seems to have the best prices right, now, and we are familiar with them so would prefer them. BUT...leaving Shannon we have two choices: 9:00 a.m. or 1:05 p.m. Now we would love the 1:05, but the layover in Newark is only one hour, which as I rememer from three years ago is not nearly long enough to corral our luggage, get through customs and make our next flight. The 9:00 a.m. departure has its own logistical problems--no time for breakfast if we have to leave the B&B before 6 a.m., being tired from the night before (probably the ceili in the Corn Barn), etc.
Any thoughts, anyone? So far on any of the other airlines I haven't found the truly perfect flight schedule. I'm leaving Corpus Christi and my sisters Amarillo so we will all have at least two changes no matter what we do. Although Delta will take me from CRP to Atlanta and then direct to Shannon, but the spectre of bankruptcy makes me leary of Delta.
Perhaps I should just go find a travel agent to brain this out for me. The $6 surcharge (or whatever it is now) might be a good investment.
I live in Atlanta and take Delta all the time. I wouldn't worry about the bankruptcy. Most of the major airlines are in it, going into it or coming out of it. Seems to be a rite of passage in the post 9-11 era. Hey, maybe I will be on the same Delta flight with you sometime! Now, wouldn't that be fun?
As for the early departure flight, most B&Bs will leave you food to snack on for breakfast in your room or leave out cereal, etc. in the dinging room. Since the ceili in the corn barn starts at around 7 it does not go really late. As long as you don't go pub crawling all night in Bunratty you should get a good night's sleep.
If the price is right on Delta I highly recommend them. All my flights have been good and the service is excellent. Only gripe I had was a couple of years ago when I was on a plane without individual air vents and was too warm. Oh, and I had a flight canceled because someone drove a luggage cart into the side of the plane in Shannon and put a hole in the plane. They put everyone up for the night and we had an extra night in Ireland. I'm sure that won't happen again!
Both of us on Delta just might bring them back! I'll be looking for you if we decide to fly Delta. I sure like the idea of only the one connection. I'll have to check how things would be out of Amarillo for my sisters. Surely they could get to Atlanta from Amarillo somehow. They are excited enough about the trip to hitchhike if necessary.
One of the Delta flights I was looking at had a 15 hour layover in Atlanta. I think I'll pass on that one.
Was I correct about one hour in Newark not being enough time? I really do like at least 2 hours when making connections. The last time we went to Ireland my plane out of Houston was delayed and I just about walked off the Houston flight onto the Shannon-bound plane in Newark. We are going to be exhausted coming home and I don't want to take a chance on missing connections and getting stranded somewhere.
Delta is out for the Amarillo travelers. The ticket is almost $300 more than Continental. Apparently Delta doesn't fly out of Amarillo and they have to get to Houston via Continental anyway.
I would skip that 15 hour layover too. I think you are right that one hour is not enough time for your connection. Especially when you consider what security is now. Sometimes in Atlanta the security lines coming back (before I can get into baggage claim) are 40-60 minutes long. Yes, they make all international flights go through security after deplaning. Pick up luggage, go through immigration and security, re-check luggage, go to baggage claim, wait for luggage again. It is like mice in a maze. I want my piece of cheese when I'm finished!
