Ennis or Doolin

Michele & others.

Hello again!  The book is great although the wife has been keeping it mostly to herself.  I have a colleague going to Ireland this summer and I told her to get your book.  Anyway, we plan to drive from the Dingle area to the Burren area on May 31st & spend whatever part of the day we have on the 31st as well as the day of June 1st in the area.  We plan to only spend 1 night here & will stay in Shannon the night of the 1st as we have an early flight home on the 2nd.  My question is would be better off staying in Ennis or Doolin the night of the 31st?  Which town has more to offer?  Also how long should it take us to get from Dingle to the Burren area?  Thanks!

jb,

I'm glad the book arrived. Maybe you needed two! Perhaps you can tell me what you plan on seeing in the area. That will help me to better advise you as to which town would make more sense.

Meanwhile, I will tell you that Doolin is a small coastal village. Ennis is a busy inland market town and much larger than Doolin. Both places are famous for their music pubs.

Dingle to Doolin via the Shannon Ferry is probably 3 1/2 hours or more, depending on if you have to wait for the ferry.

Thanks for the response Michele.  The itinerary goes as follows: arrive in Shannon May 25th and drive to Kenmare.  Stay in Kenmare the 25th -28th.  This would give us the 26, 27 & 28th as full days in the Kenmare, Killarney, Beara Pen area.  May 29th & 30th in Dingle although we could leave Kenmare a day early and have 3 nights in Dingle.  The 31st we planned to drive to the Burren area.  The things we would like to see are the Cliffs of Moher and my wife has also written down Dromoland Castle and the Ennis Friary?.  I'm sure there are other things to see that we haven't discovered yet.

Based on your response if it takes us 4 hrs. to get to this area from Dingle figure that we would arrive in the area during the early afternoon on the 31st.  We would stay the night of the 31st in the area & have all day on the 1st to see what we didn't see in the Burren before heading to Shannon that evening.  In all, we would have about a day 1/2 in the Burren so not a lot of time.  I don't know if I've helped you any?

jb,

You should probably opt for an overnight stay in Doolin or Ballyvaughan. Next day you can see more and drive to stay near the airport. Not far from Dromoland Castle is Quin Abbey and Craggaunowen Project.

Keep your 4 nights in Kenmare and 2 in Dingle. It looks good.
