July 2007 - Finalized with Accommodations

Thanks to Michele and others for helping me revise my initial (slightly crazy) itinerary.  I finally have a final itinerary and have booked all the lodgings.

Tuesday: arrive Dublin, stay at Brooks Hotel.  Plan is to take the hop-on/hop-off bus around town since we may be a little tired & jet-lagged.

Wednesday:  Dublin.  Trinity College, Kilmainham Jail, Guinness Brewery.

Thursday:  head up to the airport early in the morning to pick up the rental car and start driving to Ballycastle.  We're planning on having the drive take all day and will stop periodically (Carrickfergus?).  Staying at Crockatinney Guest House.

Friday:  Carrick-a-rede rope bridge first thing in the morning (hopefully before the crowds!), then Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle and Bushmills Distillery.

Saturday:  Giant's Causeway & Dunluce Castle (if we don't have time Friday), then drive to Dunkineely in County Donegal to stay at Castle Murray.

Sunday:  Slieve League Cliffs.  Don't want to plan too much - need some quiet relaxing days and I think Castle Murray is a perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet!

Monday:  Drive to Westport.  Is there anywhere special worth stopping along the way?  Staying at Boffin Lodge in Westport.

Tuesday:  Westport.  Haven't researched what to do yet.  I want to go to Achill, but feel like it might be too far to go for the day.  My fiance will be sick of driving.

Wednesday:  Westport, then driving down to Cong to stay at Ashford Castle.

Thursday:  Drive to Doolin.  Cliffs of Moher.  Staying at Sea View House.

Friday:  Day trip to Aran Islands.

Saturday:  Drive to Bunratty.  Stop in Ennis along the way.  Have not determined lodging yet - possibly Bunratty Courtyard.  We're considering doing the Castle Banquet - haven't decided yet.

Sunday: Fly home.

We've booked a car through Kemwel - they definitely had the cheapest rates by a long shot!  We decided to pay the extra and get the automatic.  Though we're both comfortable driving a manual, with all that we've heard about the stressful driving in Ireland, we figured that having an automatic would be one less thing to worry about.

I'm still working on which activities we're going to do, but I'm excited to finally have a solid itinerary and the lodgings figured out.

Does anything look crazy?  Is there anything along my route that I should definitely make sure not to miss?  Is there anything I have listed that I should skip?  (personally, I would skip the Guinness tour based on what I've heard about it, but my fiance really wants to go)

tmac,

Kemwel does have good prices. That is why I have booked my cars with them for the past several years. I am always on a strict budget in Ireland.

Your itinerary looks good. You do have a couple of long driving days but can break it up with sightseeing. My comments are below.

Tuesday: arrive Dublin, stay at Brooks Hotel.  Plan is to take the hop-on/hop-off bus around town since we may be a little tired & jet-lagged. * Good plan.

Wednesday:  Dublin.  Trinity College, Kilmainham Jail, Guinness Brewery. * Fine.

Thursday:  head up to the airport early in the morning to pick up the rental car and start driving to Ballycastle.  We're planning on having the drive take all day and will stop periodically (Carrickfergus?).  Staying at Crockatinney Guest House. * Good. You might want to stop in Hillsborough for lunch. It is really a cute town.

Friday:  Carrick-a-rede rope bridge first thing in the morning (hopefully before the crowds!), then Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle and Bushmills Distillery. * Fine.

Saturday:  Giant's Causeway & Dunluce Castle (if we don't have time Friday), then drive to Dunkineely in County Donegal to stay at Castle Murray. * Good. If you have already seen Giant's Causeway & Dunluce, you could consider stopping in Derry to walk the walls and see the murals.

Sunday:  Slieve League Cliffs.  Don't want to plan too much - need some quiet relaxing days and I think Castle Murray is a perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet! * Fine. Castle Murray is out at St. John's Point and definitely away from the hustle and bustle. It should be nice and relaxing.

Monday:  Drive to Westport.  Is there anywhere special worth stopping along the way?  Staying at Boffin Lodge in Westport. * There is a gorgeous beach at Rossnowlagh. There are some nice drives around Sligo including Rosses Point, Glencar Lake and Waterfall, Parke's Castle. The Belleek China Factory is near Ballyshannon.

Tuesday:  Westport.  Haven't researched what to do yet.  I want to go to Achill, but feel like it might be too far to go for the day.  My fiance will be sick of driving. * See how you feel and what the weather is like. You can make the decision of what to do when there.

Wednesday:  Westport, then driving down to Cong to stay at Ashford Castle. * Lovely! Be sure to see Cong Abbey and the village.

Thursday:  Drive to Doolin.  Cliffs of Moher.  Staying at Sea View House. * Fine.

Friday:  Day trip to Aran Islands. * Fine. I hope the weather is good.

Saturday:  Drive to Bunratty.  Stop in Ennis along the way.  Have not determined lodging yet - possibly Bunratty Courtyard.  We're considering doing the Castle Banquet - haven't decided yet. * Good. Book your banquet as soon as you determine which one you want. They do fill up fast!

You have a good plan.

Michele
