trouble with kenmare B&B

Just when I thought I had my B&B situation settled in Kenmare (we'll be there for 2 days in August), everything has blown up.  Thought I was going to Abbey Court B&B.  We wanted 2 king rooms and were ready to book.  Then I'm informed that we could do that but if someone else just walked in a few days prior to by reservation and took the king room, she wasn't going to ask them to switch out of it, even though I had reserved it 6 months in advance.  Is this done?  I've read on many forums that people checked into B&B's and sometimes had to move because of prior reservations.

So I went looking again.  This time settled on The Lodge but they are not returning emails.  Now my mind is on Driftwood in Kenmare or Water's Edge.  Anyone been here??????

Besides Driftwood and The Lodge, Michele recommends Sallyport House. I don't have her book at hand to check her Quick Picks, but someone who has a book could check that for you. Don't panic when e-mails are not returned, especially this time of the year. Just keep firing them off and sooner or later you'll get a reply.

Irish 57,

That is an interesting comment from Abbey Court. Each B&B have their own policies but that one sounds a bit weird. I could understand if someone became very ill and they did not want to move them out of a room, but otherwise I would think the people booking 6 months ahead would take precedence. Actually, I toured Abbey Court last time I was in Kenmare and it looked nice.

I also toured Driftwood and it was very nice. The hosts there were delightful.

As for The Lodge not answering. Remember I told you that many places close during the winter? That could be why you have not received a response yet. Have you just sent one email? If so, send another. Sometimes my emails do not go through to Ireland on the first try.

RE: trouble with kenmare B&B

I've sent several emails to the Lodge with no response.  I'm going to book at Driftwood.  They responded within a day.  Based on several forums, including this one, it received good reviews and I'm looking forward to it.

I do know that many are down for the season but an email takes practically no time at all.  I was in correspondence with the Carriglea B&B these past few days, ironing out the their room availability (i.e, double, king, etc)  This B&B looked very promising, received good reviews.  The owner knew I was going to book and I emailed to ask what size rooms were available.  Emailed them 3 times and finally, after several days passed, they emailed today, all booked up! :(   This is my first time with B&B's in Ireland and I must say I'm learning my lessons very quickly.  That's why I'm calling Mary Browne tomorrow in florida, taking no chances.  Bunratty Lodge seems delightful and I wouldn't want to lose out. AGAIN!

Oh, Michele, received an email from Liam Holohan and mentioned your name (You are a Godsend!) we will book with them tomorrow also!!!

thanks again!

Irish 57,

Please tell Peter and Mignonne at Driftwood that I recommended them. They are truly delightful hosts and I really enjoyed meeting them. They have one king room as I recall. I will be staying there myself on my next trip to Ireland, which may well be before you go.

I'm glad to hear that Alcantra will take your booking. They are being very selective now as to who they accept at their B&B as they slowly ease into retirement over the next few years.

Michele

P.S. Tell Mary hello from me!

RE: trouble with kenmare B&B

I just spoke with Mary and I will tell her hello from you.

I have but one B&B to book now and that is in the Kilrush area.  Emailed Hillcrest View several times and finally called today.  They have a wedding party booked for my date.  Anyone have suggestions for a B&B in the Kilkee/Kilrush area?   I guess I'm back to the drawing boards again! :)

Irish,

Have you checked with Nolan's? They are a wonderful bed & breakfast in Kilkee. You might give them a holler.

Bit

Irish57,
I had the same experience with the Lodge in Kenmare - no response to any of my emails. I recently booked with the Shelbourne Lodge.  It looks very nice, and they answered my email right away.

We'll be in Kenmare in August, too (19 and 20) - when are you going?

Irish 57,

If it is a large wedding it could clog up the whole town and fill the B&Bs and hotels for miles around. I have run into that problem many times on weekends.

RE: trouble with kenmare B&B

We'll be in Kikee,Kilrush on a Sunday.  We were planning on stopping in this area to break up the trip from Dingle to the Cliffs.  After some web searching this area sounds interesting.  Any suggestions for B&B's in this area.  REally dissapointed on Hillcrest View.  Looked very good.  Checked out Nolan's, looks o.k. but no tv in the rooms.  (parents like to watch tv before sleeping)  I'll do some more checking on the internet in the meantime.

Irish 57,

Hillcrest View is the only B&B I can personally recommend in the area. That does not mean there are no other good ones. So keep up your search.

We had a great stay at Virginia's Guesthouse.  The room was small, but the innkeepers, Neil and Noreen, more than made up for it.  The breakfast was great.  The restaurant downstairs, Mulcahy's, was very good and convenient.

Hello Irish57,

Regarding a Kilrush BandB, sounds like you might be trying to book on a weekend. If looking for a week day, try http://clarkekilrush.com/index.html Clarke's Bed and Breakfast. We have stayed there twice and tried to book a weekend night for May, but Mary doesn't do weekends any more. S o we are staying at Hillcrest B and B. (thanks, Michele).

Helen,

I'm glad to hear you got a reservation at Hillcrest. Tell Eithne hello from me. She is a lovely host. It sounds like Mary at Clarke's is easing out of the business? A lot of B&B owners are heading in that direction. All the new hotels being built are putting a lot of pressure on the small B&Bs who can't compete with all the "specials" the hotels are sponsering at the moment. Some B&B owners think the hotel chains are trying to drive them out of business and that once that happens the hotels will hike their prices skyward. Time will tell!

Michele

I personally will stay in B&Bs as long as there are good ones in Ireland. The closest I have ever come to a hotel there is the two stays in castle hotels and that just for the cachet associated with the word "Castle." If my sisters didn't insist, I would have booked another B&B instead of a castle hotel. Just love the whole B&B experience.
