After listing our wanna-sees, we have decided to head north from Shannon for the last two weeks of September. We'll have eleven days on the ground. Feel free to weigh in and give your opinions; this is a first draft and very tentative. There are some longish driving days but broken up by multi-night stays.
Monday: visit King John's Castle in Limerick, stay in Tuam or that area (no B&B yet) Tuesday: visit Knock, head on to Achill Island, stay Bervie B&B on the island Wednesday: explore Achill Island, stay Bervie Thursday: explore Achill Island, stay Belleek Castle in Ballina Friday: head north, explore Sligo area, stay Donegal Manor(?) in Donegal Saturday: head further north, stay Ballycarton House in Limavady Sunday: explore Inishowen Peninsula, stay Ballycarton House Monday: Giant's Causeway, {sorry, the Rope Bridge will be taken down by then}, stay Ballycarton House Tuesday: head south, stay Iorras B&B in Sligo Wednesday: Belleek Factory tour and shopping, Strokestown House, stay Athlone (no B&B yet) Thursday: Drive on south, visit Clonmacnoise. Ceili in the Corn Barn that evening. Stay Bunratty Lodge or Headley Court, Bunratty.
Most of that will work. There is a ferry across Lough Swilly from Magilligan to Greencastle that might prove useful to you when you are in Limavady.
Good news! Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge has extended their opening times. They are now open March 4 to October 31. If the weather is very good they even extend to beyond those months. When you are there the time is 10 am to 5:15 pm. Be sure to arrive at least an hour before they close so you can do it. It is quite a hike to the bridge.
I was not impressed with Belleek Castle.
Maybe stay in Enniskillen instead of Sligo? Then you don't have to backtrack to Belleek.
Thanks, Michele. We are pretty sure we want a night in a castle so what about Markree Castle in Co. Sligo? Their website looks good, but then most people (and castles) put their best foot forward on a website.
I guess that's good news about the Rope Bridge! Two of us will brave it with one shouting encouragement from the shore. I'll pass that news along to my sisters.
Enniskillen will be a good choice over Sligo. I was just looking at larger towns last night. If memory serves me, we stayed in Enniskillen last time after visiting Belleek.
All over Texas and Oklahoma the Jones girls will be bumping into things and running off the road due to lack of sleep! Like the little boy in the commercial,"We're too excited to sleep!"
So those aren't micro-burst tornadoes in texas & oklahoma, after all, just the Jones girls all a twitter
If I could suggest staying in Roscommon Town over Athlone, Roscommon Castle and the Abbey are reason enough for the stay in Roscommon town. Eammon & Mary have a delightful guesthouse, Gleeson's, in the heart of the town and Doorly's pub, just across the square, is fantastic. If your heart is set on Athlone, then check out Cornamagh House & Gardens. I am thrilled to see that you will be visiting Strokestown. You will enjoy it immensely.
I don't know that your travels woudl take you close enough for a night there but one of my favorite Castle lodgings is Castle Leslie, in Co. Monaghan.
Michele, I am now at home and looking at my atlas. Did you mean that the ferry runs across Lough Foyle rather than Lough Swilly?
And it looks like if we stay in Enniskillen we would still have to backtrack to Belleek. Perhaps we could spend that night in Donegal, Ballyshannon or Bundoran. It was Ballyshannon that we stayed last trip, and I'm afraid not in a B&B I would recommend again.
Bit, it looks as if we won't be close enough to Castle Leslie. But it definitely will go on the Check Out for Next Trip list.
You are right. I got my loughs mixed up. The ferry goes across Lough Folye. I should have been looking at my larger map rather than the one I need a magnifying glass for! Thanks for keeping me on my toes.
As for staying in Enniskillen, I was thinking that you could go down through Omagh and stop at the Ulster American Folk Park. Donegal or Ballyshannon would work as well as Sligo. Sometimes in Ireland it is impossible to avoid backtracking.
I have not visited Markree Castle. I have heard mixed feedback on it.
Please tell me more about Cornamagh House. I have that one bookmarked to look at next time. Glasson Stone Lodge is an excellent place just north of Athlone.
Cornamagh House was one of those pleasant surprises found when I just couldn't drive another mile. The first B&B I stopped at was not taking lodgers at the time and called ahead to Cornamagh. They assured me that I would be pleased. Pleased is an understatement. I wish that I had been able to stay longer than one night! Mary had a hot cuppa waiting and a warm scone. Brian took my bag upstairs. The attention to detail in every area of the house is what I keep going back to time and again. From the moment I walked in the door, I could tell this was a well run B&B. The furnishings are period and the artwork was, if not originals, excellent reproductions. The bedrooms are of average size, not so small that you feel like you are in a broom closet and not so big that you feel you need rollerskates. The bed was extremely comfortable. I love sheets that feel crisp and cool without the pilling that some sheets get after numerous washings. I loved the quilt on my bed, it reminded me of being at my Gran's. The shower was great, plenty of hot water, room to turn around and to wash my hair without being a contortionist. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and they served REAL coffee!
They do have cats in the garden, which can be a drawback for some people. However, that just added to my sense of home. The gardens were nice when I went in July but I bet that they are spectacular in the blooming season. I enjoyed my walk with the horses, as that is my usual routine after dinner at home.
I haven't had the pleasure of staying at Glasson Stone yet. Have you been in Glasson Village when the roses are in full bloom? Glasson Village was and Inspiration for the Poet Goldsmith. If you get a chance and are familiar with the area, read The Deserted Village. You will find yourself transported to Glasson.
I want to have one month to explore all the B&Bs of County Roscommon and the bordering towns. I keep hoping for those winning 5 and a powerball! I look forward to your impression of Cornamagh.
How about Kinnitty Castle in Birr? Anyone have experience with them? That would be a good place for the next-to-last night and a pleasant drive down Lough Derg shore to Bunratty.
There is another thread about castle hotels. On it I mentioned that I have visited Kinnitty Castle. I was unable to see the bedrooms because it was totally booked and a wedding was going on. The castle itself is very baronial and ancient in aspect. All the public areas were more castle-like than a lot of the more polished castle hotels. Another forum member has stayed there several times and really liked it.
I'm sorry, Michele, I can't seem to get the Search feature to work on my computer, and I couldn''t find that thread. But I did remember your liking SOME castle and I'm relieved to know it was Kinnitty. Perhaps if you could give the title of the thread I can find it.
