Shannon Airport

We're traveling to Ireland in a few weeks, and I have a quick question.  Does the 3 hour arrival at the airport prior to your departure include the time needed to clear US customs at Shannon airport?

Thanks to everyone - I have enjoyed reading and learning from everyone.

TC,

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad to hear that you picked up some tips for your trip here. Yes, three hours is good for returning your car, checking in, getting your VAT tax back, going through security and clearing customs.

I hope you have a great trip. Do let us know how it goes.

Three hours will work out well. Big time shopping fans should add another hour on to fully experience Shannon Duty Free...it's a great place to finish up that souvenier shopping. It's the type of place you could zip through in ten minutes or linger in for hours.

Corey,

That is so true about Shannon Duty Free. Nowadays I try to zip through (since I have practically bought out Ireland at this point!). Although, on occasion something catches my eye that I can't live without. One thing that is always in my duty free bag is Butler's Irish Chocolate. The shop usually has some good deals on it. Sometimes even free samples. Now that attracts my husband's attention.

I've gotten in the habit of bringing back Butler's Chocolate bars for friends and family. They're small and light and just the right price...and everyone loves them. I find it easiest to just buy them at Duty Free. After all these years of going back and forth, I really can't afford to bring back whiskey and crystal like I did in my early trips.

I've traveled with people who have spent all their VAT tax refund and a few hundred more in duty free. It's interesting how the airlines appear to consider the Duty Free bags exempt from carryon rules...I'm not complaining and neither is duty free.

Thanks for your help. I'll have to look for that chocolate. I'm sure we'll do some shopping there - I look forward to it!!

Again, thanks.

Everyone,

The best price I have found for the Butler's chocolate bars are in Bunratty Village Mills. If you use a 10% off coupon it is even a better deal. At Shannon Duty Free they usually have the boxes of truffles; either three small boxes or two larger boxes for a pretty low sale price. I usually get the boxes for gifts. The bars are jammed into every corner of my suitcase!
