Where to stay in Shannon - things to do

Hi there,

First time traveler to Ireland in August with a group of 5 - 25 year old females. We are doing a private driver tour from Dublin to Shannon, but a few of us will be staying three extra days in Shannon - with no tour. We are interested in staying someplace fun, with a convenient location, accessible to the center of town. Basically - want to walk around during the day - visit different places....drink at many of the fine pubs. Any great locations/hotels you can suggest?

Thanks for you help!

Kate,

Welcome to the forum. From what you have told me I don't think you want to stay in Shannon. There is not a lot there; a small mall, a few hotels and housing for people who work in the area. Nearby Bunratty village is too small and you would see everything in one day.

I think what would work for you is Ennis or Limerick. Ennis is smaller than Limerick City but it has lots of good pubs, etc. If you want more shopping then Limerick would have that. You can also get day tours from Limerick to places like the Cliffs of Moher.

Let me know what appeals and I will recommend a couple of places to stay.

Michele

Yes, thank you. I did hear that there was not much in Shannon - but the airport, and did hear either Ennis or Limerick would be good. Just wondering what would be better for shopping, walking, pubs etc...so thanks for your reply. Any good hotels in Ennis? I was looking into Temple Gate - any good?

Kate,

Temple Gate can be good if there isn't a wedding. We once had a sleepless night because of the quests across the hall from us. The hotel is a solid 3 star, fairly good rooms, very good food, and the location is the very best. I've stayed twice for the total of 10 days. I love Ennis and as I said the location is wonderful and the staff is great also. Another good place is Old Ground, it is in the town also and might have better rooms in their addition. If I get back, I plan to give them a try. With both of these hotels, you'd park your car and not have to use it until you are ready to leave. I never had a car when I stayed. I'd use taxis for tours. I hope you'll have a wonderful trip.

Kate,

As Joan has suggested, the Temple Gate or Old Ground would be good choices for Ennis. Am I correct in assuming that you will not have a car for those three days?
