We are flying into Shannon, arrive at 7:45 a.m. and had planned to spend the first night in Castlegregory at the Shores. Since that seems to be quite a bit of driving, we are considering seeing the Cliffs of Moher and spending the night in Doolin.
We would really like to spend a night at the Shores. We actually have a reservation there for our first night, but I am thinking that we might be better off in Doolin and then just heading straight into Dingle town.
Our tentative schedule: 9/3 Doolin 9/4 9/5 Dingle 9/6 9/7 9/8 Killarney--Reservations at Loch Lein Country House 9/9 9/10 Kinsale 9/11 Near the airport
Any thoughts on our itinerary? We are hikers, enjoy the outdoors, hope for a day or 2 of golfing, our BIL has requested we visit Kinsale--he enjoys fine dining. Thanks for your help.
I have always wondered at the theory of going up to travel down, as in Doolin before Dingle, so many folks do it thusly. I however, would probably travel Dingle, Killarney, Kinsale and then Ennis not Doolin.
You really need two days to explore the Dingle area. Ennis as the last stop will put you at a good vantage for both the airport on the 12th and for a day of driving to explore the Cliffs of Moher, lunch & shopping in Doolin, a drive through the Burren. Top that off with some fantastic Trad music in the Ennis pubs and you have a nice package, indeed. Kinsale does have some excellent restaurants but for that matter so does Killarney (Menton's for one) & Kenmare (Limetree is my favorite).
Well you have to get up to the cliffs some time during your trip and since it is just a 1 1/2 hour drive on your first day, staying in Doolin is doable. I think you are right not driving too far after a long flight and with jet-lag. It affects people differently. I think your itinerary looks good and I like the fact that most of your overnights are multiple-night stays.
Change your reservations for your first night in Doolin and then proceed with the rest of the trip as outlined. That way you only need change one reservation. Let Annette at The Shores know right away.
I think your best days for golfing will probably be in Killarney.
