Irish / Ireland movies

Hi all!

I'm in the midst of starting a collection of movies about Ireland and/or filmed in Ireland and I'd like to see what recommendations the members may have. Below is a list I've compiled off-hand and I hope you can add to it. These are only in alphabetical order and no effort to critique them has been made! wink

Agnes Browne
Da
Darby O'Gill and The Little People
Far and Away
In The Name Of the Father
Michael Collins
My Left Foot
Over Ireland (documentary)
Ryan's Daughter
The Boys and Girl From County Clare
The Commitments
The Quiet Man
This Is My Father
Waking Ned Devine

Chris,

To that list, you will have to add the newly released Wind That Shakes The Barley, which I hope will be released to DVD soon!

Slan Beo,

Bit

Evelyn
The Van
The Snapper ( i think that is the name)
ther is another one about two kids in wheelchairs who are paralyized which was pretty good.

The Wedding Planner

Also this came up on Fodor's not too long ago. Why not do a search on Fodors. There was a very long list.

I'm with you, I so enjoy anything about Ireland.

Good Luck, Joan(YaYa)

An underrated movie in my book is "Widow's Peak," a 1994 film set in Ireland featuring Mia Farrow, Joan Plowright, and Natasha Richardson.  A heck of a story, and wonderful scenery to boot!

Off the top of my head:

The Field (grim tale of old Connemara)
The Dead (based on James Joyce story)
The Long Good Friday (with Bob Hoskins, actually takes place in England, but about the IRA)
Bloody Sunday (excellent documentary of Bloody Sunday in '70s Derry)
The Playboys (story of itinerant theatre group with Aidan Quinn)
Angela's Ashes

Great ideas!

"Widow's Peak" sounds like it has a great cast and I can't believe I forgot "The Field", "Angela's Ashes" and "The Playboys" (almost anything with Aidan Quinn will be good).

"The Wind...." wasn't even on my radar yet because I though it still was awaiting release on DVD.

"The Dead", wasn't that John Huston's last film? I now remember seeing some of it but it didn't come to mind, thanks.

See, this is why I threw this out there, I knew the fine folks here wouldn't let me down! Keep 'em coming! Now, I just have to find a way to get the OK to increase the "Home Entertainment" budget, lol!

"Out of the West"
"The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne"
"Circle of Friends"
"Dancing at Lughnasa"

Somewhere I have an old list from TV Guide published on a long-ago St. Patrick's Day of the top ten Irish movies but bless me if I can find it...

Here's the link to the FODORS thread that I think YaYa was referring to:

www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=34516051

If this is it, it was a bit more than a while ago.  I started it, back in July of 2004, although somebody 'dredged it back up' last November.  I mention this, because any NEWER films won't be listed....

Waking Ned Devine is a fun movie, but it was filmed on the Isle of Man.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a very sad film.

Movies have been made from all of the books in Roddy Doyle's trilogy:
The Commitments
The Snapper
The Van

Magdalene Sisters

Also, here's an online list. I'm not sure how current it is. It includes movies filmed in Ireland (including movies filmed primarily elsewhere but with snippets filmed in Ireland) as well as movies about Irish characters.

"The Ballad of Frankie Starlight" has some Irish characters. Some scenes were actually filmed in Kingsville, Texas, where I live, and one old building downtown still has the paint on it where they made it look like an old bar. Not much of a movie, but there's that local color. The scene with a cropduster flying over bare brown fields gave us a laugh.
