Train from Galway to Dublin and Back?

Has any reader/traveler ever taken Galway-Dublin train roundtrip?

Just curious about how long it takes ... and -- mostly -- whether just a day spent in Dublin would be worthwhile.  What do ya think?

Thanks!

Bill

PS  Leaving for the Green Island Wednesday!!

Here's the link for ticket and timetable info.  The web page advertises "Galway Returns from 30 Euro", but price may vary by date and time.

www.irishrail.ie/home/

There is a train from Galway at 9:15 (probably the EARLIEST you would want) that arrives Dublin Heuston at 11:58.  Last return train FROM Dublin departs Heuston Station at 19:05 and arrives Galway at 21:48.  Price of THAT ticket on 8 May IS 30 Euro, per adult.

If you did that 'RUN', allowing for 30 min, each way to get to/from City Center (O'Connell Street), would leave you about 6 hours of tour time.  You could visit the GPO, do the Hop-ON / Hop OFF tour, for an overview and squeeze in the Book of Kells at Trinity, if the line isn't TOO long.  You might also have enough time to walk down Grafton to ST. STEVEN'S GREEN.

Worth it?  NOT for me to say.

Hope this helps YOU to decide.

Bob

Worth it? Good question, Bob -- wish I could answer it, but never have been ...

Actually, tho, the 7:15 from Galway looks like a better choice as we'd get there a lot earlier and have more time to sightsee.

I don't know -- I guess I'd have to leave it to the more experienced to judge whether or not a full day would be worthwhile.

Thanks -- I appreciate the input.

Over on FODORS, a while back, Mellisa5 started a thread called: "Dublin: A Must See, or a Waste of Time?".  There were 113 responses.  And while a FAIR number were "OFF-TOPIC", most had interesting facts on sites to see, things to do and reasons to go.  Over-all, the majority opinion was a resounding, "YES!".

Here's the link:

FYI:
Interestingly enough, Mellisa5 ultimately decided NOT to include Dublin in her itinerary...

PS:  Hope you have a GREAT trip!  I'm starting to firm up SOME of my bookings/plans for late June.  Please be sure to report back, to bring us 'up to speed' on all the latest.

Right up to speed with you, Bob -- I was just reading that thread on Fodor's when I saw your addition here. (The thread was interesting, once I navigated my way thru all the emoticons ... )

We're both train buffs, and we like the pace of trains, fast or slow. Seems you always see more than driving anyway -- and what could be more picturesque than a 2 1/2 hour train ride across Ireland?

We'll mull it over ... Might even make this a spur-of-the-moment day trip. In any case, it will be in our trip report when we get back in May.

Many thanks, Bob -- you always have good advice.

Bill
