One special place to gaze out upon

For you veteran Hibernian travellers, what one special place in the Irish countryside (village or B&B) would you pick for just enjoying the scenery for a day from that point or short walks in the vicninity?

We won't have a car and plan to take several tours out of Galway.  But we were looking at spending one day out in a village or remote B&B where we could just soak in the scenery without worrying about jumping on a boat or tour bus.  Somewhere in the West (Galway, Mayo, Clare) would be the best for us.

You can't go wrong anywhere in Ireland, but I really enjoyed the Connemara area.  Cong. Cliften, Roundstone, Leenane, Oughterard. This area is quite compact, and you can see it all pretty easily. I would not miss Killary Harbor, or Kylemore Abbey !

Cheers!

I can think of a number of places that meet your description, but most are in the SW and/or are only accessible by car.  Given your 'No Car' caveat, I would recommend a day trip to one of the Aran Islands.  Lots of walks and lots of scenic wonders -- all easily reachable by either ferry or a quick, inexpensive flight from Galway.  A shuttlebus picks you up near Eyre square, takes you to the plane or boat and returns you, that evening.

Alternately, spend the night there.

Hi,

I totally agree with Bob!  A day on, say, Inis Mor', would be ideal for meditation, talking with the everyday Irish, visiting the Forts by jaunting car or biking.  Fly from Inverin, it's so easy and fast.  It will get you there before all the "tourists".
Wherever you choose to go, have a wonderful day!

The above ideas are good. My last trip (by bicycle with 4 friends who'd never been to Ireland), we skipped Inish Mor and spent 2 nights on Inishmaan Island. It's much less traveled and very traditional. We stayed at An Dun Bed and Breakfast, where they offer gourmet food and incredible friendliness. The island is beautiful in the Aran Island way, and even in 1 day you can get to know some local people, and become a regular in the pub.

Padraic Flaherty of An Dun will even pick you up at the ferry dock and take you to the B&B.

splitstar,

I agree with the Aran Islands too. It will be much easier for you to get there from Galway.

Splitstar,

I like the above advice and would like to add one more place. You could taxi to Ballynahinch Castle and chill out there. There is lovely scenery of river and lake and great walks on the grounds. A hackney would be less expensive.

Ballynahinch is a beautiful place. I thought of it, but didn't suggest it because of the transportation problem. Once you get there, however, you can enjoy many lovely walks on the grounds without needing a car.

Splitstar,

Joan is right that Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is a special place. If the taxi fare doesn't scare you away, it might be just what you are looking for.
