Maynooth

Hello!

I will have a few days before my Ireland tour and we will be staying at Carton House in Maynooth.  We are going in June.  Isn't Maynooth is close to the hotel? (Around a mile?) Is there anything in this town?  Or is it a small town with nothing much too it?

Thanks for any help!
Jessica

Jessica,

Maynooth is a wonderful university town. It has a shopping Mall (OMG, I can taste the Dutch Chocolate Ice Cream, even still), the university itself and the castle ruins, just to name a few points of interest. The Bi-centenary Gardens on the Maynooth Campus are a real treat. It is based on the biblical theme 'from origins to destiny' and reflects the salvation of humankind in Genesis chapters two and three. All plants in the garden have been mentioned in the Bible. There are several delicious restaurants at which you can eat.  Though considered small by american standards, Maynooth has a population of around 9,000, excluding pets and livestock.

As soon as I can find my photos, I will post some pictures on this thread of the garden and of Maynooth town.

Carton is about 1 mile, an Irish mile, from Maynooth of the Galway road.

Slan Beo,

Bit

CowboyCraic-

I look forward to your pictures when you find them!  Maynooth sounds like a nice little town(by American standards!) to visit!  And Dutch Chocloate ice cream sounds WONDERFUL!!!

Now this may be a silly question- What is a "Irish mile"?

Jessica,

I found it to be about a mile and a half or more. Or I guess it could be a little less. You know, about a mile.

My Best, Joan

Jessica,

An Irish mile is determined by the Irishman who measured it. It could be a mile or it could be a mile-and-a-half or even two. It is of inderterminate length. wink
