My husband, parents, and myself will be leaving for Ireland at the end of July. Spending 3 days in London prior to landing in Dublin. Our driving intinerary looks like this:
Monday,Arrive Dublin around noon, pick up car and leave for Kilkenny.
2nights in Kilkenny
Wednesday, leave Kilkenny to Kenmare via a very scenic but long route, goes something like this...Kilkenny to Cashel/Fermoy/Mallow/past Blarney/ Macroom to Kenmare.
2 nights in Kenmare
Friday, leave Kenmare for Dingle, stopping in Killarney for lunch
2 nights in Dingle
Sunday, Leave Dingle for County Clare via ferry, overnight in Kilkee
Monday, Leave Kilkee for the coast towards the Cliffs up to Ballyvaughn for lunch then back to Bunratty for the night. Trad Irish night in Bunratty.
Any opinions about the intinerary would be appreciated and secondly, does anyone have proven suggestions about great meals they've had in any of the towns I'll be visiting??? Comments most welcome.
Two of three folks in our group picked dinner at the Lime Tree in Kenmare as our favorite meal of the trip (and it was 2nd for the other person). Not budget friendly, but if you are planning on a splurge dinner, this would be a great choice.
Looks good. I have a bunch of restaurants and pubs in my book for the areas you are visiting. I agree with the ones mentioned by the other forum members in this posting. I recently had a good meal at Prego in Kenmare. It is a small Italian place with lower cost food than the others.
There is a new toll motorway around Fermoy that is a rip-off. Instead go from Mitchelstown to Mallow and avoid Fermoy. Whatever you do, do not take the R619 unless you like roller-coaster, tiny, winding roads that seem to take forever to drive. It was pretty scenic though.
We just attended the Trad Night at Bunratty this past Saturday (6/2).
The show was a nice way to end the trip, with step dancing, story telling and traditional music. Most of the performers are also servers.
You get a welcoming drink of your choice, mead, a Bailey's-type cream drink or a fruit drink. Dinner was a choice of Lamb Stew or Poached Salmon. I can vouch for the stew, delicious! They served a seemingly never-ending supply of brown bread. There were sides of veggies (plenty of potatoes, carrots and parsnips). Drinks were pitchers of red and white wines, water, coffee, tea and orange drink. Dessert was a slice of apple pie with fresh (unsweetened) whipped cream. We were also served Barmbrack. I wasn't sure I'd be able to get back into the car because I was so full!
All-in-all, a good dinner. I enjoyed this better than the Medieval Dinner in the castle that I attended in 1988 and it's less expensive.
In Dingle we ate at "Fenton's" which was a bit pricey but very flavorful. We also had the "pub grub" at Murphy's. I'd eat at either the next time I'm there. Of course, if the weather is good, you can always hit the SuperValue in town (just down from Fenton's) and take a picnic lunch out to the area around Dunquin. The view of Blasket Island would make a nice backdrop.
In Ballyvaughan, either Monk's or Hyland's Burren Restaurant, with Monk's being the more causual.
In Kenmare we loved going to breakfast at Prego and dinner at Bacus. The owner, of both places, is really nice and the food is very good. When at Prego, for breakfast, be sure and ask to see the menu for Bacus and check out the yummy food. Good luck with other places, Kenmare was one of our favorite little towns, people were so nice like everywhere in Ireland!! Youngka

Kenmare- we had a wonderful dinner at Packies! Fresh ingredients and the strawberries for dessert were just right! Cozy atmosphere and everyone very friendly! Reservations were recommended- luckily we got in!
Your itinerary looks great- like something we would do when we return.. We stayed in a different town all 13 nights- kind a crazy but we got a tidbit of what we liked and what we would pass on.. Enjoy your trip!!
If you want to spend your Killarney time more 'product' - ivly (as in touring and shopping), save your appetite for another twenty minutes north and stop into Killorglin. Drive over the Bridge and park in the Square.
On the North side of the street is Dev's On The Square -- a little pricey, but terriffic.
On the South side of the street is the Benz Cafe -- more casual and less expensive, but ALSO terriffic. Try the banoffee.
We ate at both in 2005.
