Lough Corrib Cruise

We are staying our first night (Sep 6) in Ballyvaughn.  The second night we are staying in Clifden.  How long does it take to drive to Cong from Ballyvaughn?  We would love to do the Lough Corrib boat cruise.  The tour option we are looking at departs Cong at 11:15 am, visits Inchagoil Island, stops for picture opportunity at Ashford Castle, & returns to Cong at 12:45 pm.  Then, how long is the drive to Clifden from Cong?

Merlene,

According to www.theaa.com, it should be about 56 miles and take 1 3/4 to 2 hours. Check that site out for your travel times. As I learned a few weeks ago, 35mph will be about the best you'll average in Ireland.

Where are you staying in Ballyvaughan? We stayed at the Cappabhaile B&B our first two nights there. Conor, the owner, is an authority on the area and a wonderful host. We wanted to make the run up to Cong to check out Ashford and the Quiet Man movie set but we we spent most of our time climbing around The Burren. Oh well, that makes yet another great reason to plan a return visit.

Good luck and have a fantastic trip!

Chris

Merle,

Provided you don't get caught in Galway traffic you can probably get to Cong in the time that Chris estimated. If you are going directly from Cong to Clifden via Maam Cross it will take about 2 hours. If you planned on seeing things like Killary Harbor and Kylemore Abbey a different route would be required and it would take longer. Or perhaps you have another day for those things?

Chris,
We are staying at Drumcreehy Guest House in Ballyvaughn. When we were in Ireland in 2004, Ballyvaughn looked like such a nice little town to explore. When we leave the Shannon airport, we are heading to the Burren. Hope to see the Poulnabron Dolmen, other stuff, and then the Aillwee Cave before settling in for the night. May be too much on our first day. . . we'll have to play it by ear!

Somewhere in there, I would like to see Kilmacduagh Monastic site and Thoor Ballylee if possible. May have to take the later cruise in Cong.

Michelle,
In 2004 we saw parts of Connemara and also Kylemore Abbey so we are bypassing the Abbey this time. I was hoping to see Killary Harbor on our way to Westport the next day. I'm torn between the Killary Harbor Fjord Boat Tour and the Lough Corrib cruise. Will we miss a lot if we just stop in Killary Harbor and don't take the Fjord Boat Tour?

Merle,

You can see much of Killary Harbor by road if you take the R335 to Westport. As always, there are many choices to make while in Ireland.
