My family is about to take our first trip to Ireland. Something I have dreamed of and prayed for, for some time. I have already received some great advice on this board for which I am very greatful and am hoping for some more. My oldest son (20 years old) arrived in Derry last Sunday. He will be living and working there for 8 weeks. He is already loving Ireland. My husband, younger son and myself will arrive in July after a stop in London. My father and sister, both Americans live in London so it is not possible for me to cross the Atlantic without seeing them, otherwise the entire trip would be in Ireland. The itinerary, despite my best efforts remains fluid - my husband has friends in Derry who have extended an invitation for us to stay with them. So here goes.
July 16 - Arrive in Belfast, go to Derry sightsee and visit
July 17, 18, 19 Daytrips from Derry to the Antrim Coast, Mourne Mountins, Ulster American Folk Museum
July 20 - Travel to Donegal, Hopefully see Donegal Town and enjoy some good music. Lodging currently at Ocean View, considering switching closer to Donegal Town.
July 21 - Drive out to Slieve League Cliffs, perhaps some hiking, perhaps a visit to Glencolmcille. Continue up the coast to Dunfanaghy - I know this will be a long day. Reservations at Rosman House for 2 nights. (May have to limit to one night if my son has to be at work in the morning>0 July 22 - Attend Mass in Dunfanaghy, explore the area, Horseback Riding on the beach at 3pm.
July 23 - Gleveagh National Park or back to Derry
July 24 - Derry - adventure somewhere in the area.
July 25 Back to London on a noon flight.
I have made great progress in that I am so excited about all there is to see and do in Northern Ireland and Donegal, but as you can see I still have a limited amount of time, even less so to adventure out of town with my older son who does not have a car and I need to remain somewhat flexible in my planning.
Any insight and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am happy to hear that your son has arrived safely in Derry and is already enjoying the experience. How nice that you will get to stay with friends there when you arrive.
I think a day trip to the Mountains of Mourne is a stretch from Derry. Instead consider the Enniskillen area. It is very scenic with boat rides on the lake, Marble Arch Cave, etc. Plenty to do in the area for the day. Or you might opt to stay closer to home and sightsee in Derry itself. Another close by drive is the Inishowen Peninsula, which is very scenic.
If you get good weather definitely go to Glenveagh Castle, Gardens & Park. It is wonderful. Be sure to walk around all the various gardens and tour the castle.
