Would someone be kind enough to help me figure out a reasonable itinerary. My husband and I will be arriving in Shannon on October 9 at 7:45 a.m. We will have a rental car and would like to see Bunratty Castle, Folk Park, and the Cliffs of Moher that day. We will spend the night at Claire Inn, Newmarket-On-Fergus. The next two nights will be at the Breaffy House in Castlebar. The following two nights will be spent at the Green Isle Hotel, Naas Road (I believe a few miles south of Dublin.) The final night we will be back at the Claire Inn. We aren't interested in driving into Dublin, as we hate large cities and want to see the "real ireland." We want to go at our own pace and see some of the out of the way places, villages, natural beauty, etc. We love castles so naturally we want to see some of those plus do some shopping. We're both in our early 50s and would like to avoid back tracking if possible. Any words of wisdom?
I believe you recently ordered my book. It will give you lots of sightseeing options in the areas you are visiting.
May I ask about your itinerary? Is there a particular reason for going to Castlebar? You also mention that you hate large cities and prefer villages. So why do Dublin? Just curious about your choices.
This was a very inexpensive package deal (airfare, car rental, hotels) and the hotels were already selected and included in the pkg, thus the reason for Castlebar and Dublin. Thanks so much.
I had a feeling it was something like that. Castlebar has a very good museum - The Museum of Country Life and it is free. Westport is nearby and it is a lovely town. If you have a day of fine weather do a day trip to Achill Island and do the Atlantic Drive. It is spectacular.
In Dublin you can do the hop-on hop-off bus, which gives you a 24 hour pass. Take the entire tour and then get on and off at the sightseeing attractions that interest you. If you decide not to go into Dublin, you could easily make a day trip to Co. Wicklow just south of Dublin. Powerscourt Gardens and Glendalough are lovely.
On your cross-country treks some sightseeing stops might be Clonmacnoise, Belvedere House & Gardens, Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens.
Your trip will be a quick taste of Ireland. Hopefully you will return again some day and see more. For such a small country Ireland really packs in a lot of varied scenery and attractions.
