Hi! I've been lurking the forums here for a while, and finally thought I'd say hi and ask a question. So far, what I have seen is very helpful, so I hope you don't mind me joining!
I just finished graduate school, and my present is a trip to Ireland, which we are planning for July '08, due to various work and school schedules that can't be helped. There will be 4 of us going, but everyone is leaving the planning up to me. I am thinking we'll land in Shannon and fly out of Dublin and go for about 12 days. Beyond that, I am still researching. But I am worried that it might already be too late to book good B&B's. Do any of you have any thoughts on this? Thank you!
With one or two exceptions, you should be fine with most B&B bookings up until March or April, I would think. After that, you MIGHT find a few of the 'Better' places begining to book up. Michele can probably give a more definitive answer. The best thing about Ireland is that there are LOTS of 'Better' places!
Twelve days into SNN and out of DUB is a good "introduction", but please avoid the temptation to 'try and see it all'.
Enjoy your planning.
Bob

Welcome oficially to the forum! I am glad you decided to join in and start planning your trip for 2008 in earnest. And congrats on finishing up grad school.
It is not too late to be making reservations for 2008. Most B&Bs and guesthouses don't even take reservations till after the first of the year. You have plenty of time to plan your trip, make an itinerary and then book the places you want.
As Bob advised, try to plan an itinerary where you have as many multiple-night stays as possible. We are here to help. Let us know if you have more questions.
Thank you so much! I'm still trying to narrow down where we'd like to focus on, so I'll definitely keep the multiple-night stays in my mind when doing that. I'm sure I'll ask more questions along the way.
You have oodles of time! Don't fret at all. The one thing Bob mentioned, however, should be cut out and placed on your refrigerator so you look at it each day: "Please avoid the temptation to 'try and see it all'." That is the biggest mistake most make when going to Ireland for the first time.
I know you will probably end up with a very long list of "must sees" in Ireland. Make them in order of importance. If you don't get to the ones at the bottom of the list you won't even miss them.
Carrie, You will find so much on this site! I am still finding new areas to look/see! You will have so much fun when you get over to Ireland, but take your time. We are planning a trip for one month in March 2008, but we go thru 12Travel.com. They have told us that most self catering places do not have their 2008 rates ready. So we will probably start making plans in Nov/Dec and hope they are ready. How long is your group staying, 12 days in Dublin, or 12 days for your whole trip? Don't forget to check into train transportation. My son went from Dublin to Galway and saw a lot of the West coast in one day. They signed up for a bus tour once they got to Galway. GOOD LUCK! Youngka
