We will be staying in Kenmare of 7 days and want to know if Cliff's of Morh is to fare for one day? If not, what else could/should we see on the way or on the back?
Alos, we are leaving Kenmare on Oct 6 and flying out of Dublin on Oct 7 at 2:30 Pm. Any suggestions on where we should spend out last night?
As a day trip, the Cliffs would definitely be a long haul. You might look to overnight in a B&B in one of the small towns nearby.
There are plenty of day trips that you can take from Kenmare. Killarney and the Park is definitely doable. The Park has some excellent hiking trails. The Beara Peninsula is a nice day trip. The Gap of Dunloe is another day trip.
As for where to stay overnight in between Kenmare and Dublin, you could stay in Kilkenny and enjoy a walking tour there.
Welcome to my forum! Bit has started you off with good info. As she says doing a day trip from Kenmare to the Cliffs of Moher is a stretch. On a good day the drive with no stops will take about 4 + hours to get to the cliffs. With the days getting shorter, I don't advise it as a day trip. If you want to do it - as Bit recommended - spend the night in the area. Doolin is nearby the cliffs. A good substitute for the Cliffs of Moher might be a visit to Mizen Head. The cliffs there are not as high but the scenery is impressive. That is an easy day trip from Kenmare.
Are you flying from Dublin to the USA or elsewhere? If the US you need to be at the airport about 3 hours in advance. Dublin is a very busy airport. That means you need to be there at 11:30. I would suggest staying nearby the airport, since by the time you have breakfast and do last minute packing it will be time to leave your accommodations. There are many airport hotels or you can stay in the cute seaside village of Malahide.
Kenmare is my favorite small town in Ireland. You are in for a treat with a week of self-catering. There is much to see and do in the area. Pop into the tourist office in town and they will give you lots of brochures, maps and advice on the area. Be sure to see the Druid's Circle (in back of town) and Reenagross Park.
Definately add a word to Michele's advice about Mizen Head as a great alternative (note the view attached) to Cliffs of Moher from where you will be. That is a much easier day, and the sights will be tremendous -- and probably much less crowded at that time of the year. I would not look forward to a Kenmare-Cliffs-Kenmare drive -- yikes -- that would be a long journey and a lot of backtracking for sure!
I have a lot of restaurants and day trips from Kenmare listed in my book. Some of my favorites are The Lime Tree, Prego, Foley's and Jam. The Lansdowne Arms Hotel's pub has good pub grub. If you have a very big budget I would say that The Park Hotel or Sheen Falls Lodge would be tops.
Day trips: Beara, Ring of Kerry, Mizen Head, Sheep's Head, Bantry, Glengarriff, Killarney. That should keep you busy.
You're not an idiot, you're just excited about your trip. I stayed seven nights in Kenmare April of 2005. We went over to Killarney and it always rains on me in Killarney. We had wonderful times getting lost on Beara, we did half of the ROK, went to Glengarriff, did some touring over in Cork on back roads( please don't ask where we were), and I spend two days just wandering around Kenmare. The park, the pier, stores, and as always found a place to sit and chat.
Have a wonderful trip and yes, I had Michele's book with me.
Put my book in your suitcase right now so you don't forget it! Actually, I added a new one in my answer that is not in my book yet. So asking was a good idea. That way you have up to date info. Jam is mostly for lunch as they close in late afternoon. Wonderful sandwiches and pastries there.
