Hello all! We are leaving for Ireland on Monday the 8th, so I'm trying to wrap up a few last minute details. We won't be carrying a cell phone, so I thought to get one of those eircom cards that can be used both for the pay phones and to call back to the US (if need be). Can these be obtained at Shannon airport or should I order ahead? Anyone have any thoughts on the subject? WC
Phone cards are available at Shannon Airport. You can pick one up at either the tourist office or the shop there. Get the one with a PIN. Last time I got a 5 euro card and I still had time left on it. But I didn't call the US just around Ireland. If you plan on calling home you might want the 10 euro card.
I bought a phone card at the airport in Shannon. The card had a pin # and it worked fine in the Republic, but not in Northern Ireland. I had to buy an international card and had a hard time finding someone who knew where to buy one. I finally got one at a post office.
Good point about the calling cards. Since the ROI and NI are two separate countries you need different cards for each one. Kind of a pain, but what can you do?
To answer my own question, and for folks who might be asking the same---get the Eircom card. We picked one up at the airport for 10E. After six calls -- SNN to Dingle, Dingle to Killarney, Dingle to Minnesota, Cashel to Salthill, Salthill to Castlegregory, Clarecastle to Minnesota---we still had 4E left. We never felt out of contact and didn't have to carry the accursed cell phone--priceless. WC
I'm glad to hear the Eircom calling card worked well for your trip. I'm sure you have lots of other tips for everyone too. Feel free to chime in whenever you want.
