Car Rental question

My husband and I are renting a car in Ireland at the end of the month for 9 days. We found a great deal with Avis on the Ireland site that includes CDW and TP. We have two options for covering the excess and I hoped to get opinions on which is better.

1) Super CDW coverage through Avis, to the tune of about 125E ($175USD) extra (this is nearly doubling the cost of the car rental!)... however tires, glass and undercarriage aren't covered.

2) buying a policy from insurance4carhire.com, to the tune of about $100USD, and everything is covered but we are responsible for the upfront cost and then have to submit a claim.

Seems to me the no brainer is to go with option 2 as it is about half the cost? I've also checked into my MC coverage, and it does exist, but doesn't cover tires or any third parties, which I don't feel comfortable with.

Thanks!
Erin

Erin (cool name, not only because of the obvious tie-in, but also because I have a granddaughter by that name), we took out the Super CDW from insurance4carhire for our trip. Fortunately, we didn't have to use it, but the peace of mind for me was worth the $100. I have yet to hear of anyone submitting a claim to them.

Erin,

Welcome to my forum. We can only give you info that we have first-hand info on. As Dude has said, she bought the insurance through insurance4carhire. However, she did not have to use it. So far we do not know anyone who has had to use it and what it entailed. We are in the dark as to the insurance and service provided if there is an accident and you have to file a claim with insurance4carhire. In other words, we just don't know.

If you buy Super CDW from your car company it will cover what it says it will cover. It will reduce the excess owed to whatever it says. However, as you indicated it will not cover tires, glass or undercarriage. You would be responsible for that.

In cases such as these you have to go with what you feel comfortable with. What is the worst that can happen? If insurance4carhire does not work you would be stuck with whatever Avis' deductible is. If you bought Avis' Super CDW you would be stuck paying for tires, glass or undercarriage.

As with everything in life, there are risks involved. Sorry we cannot give you a pat answer. Everyone has different needs and is comfortable with different plans.

We took out the insurance4carhire also, but fortunately didn't have to use it.

Someone had better volunteer to have a claim with insurance4carhire so that we can check it out!

I'm trying out insurance4carhire as well...alas, I hope I don't have to use it, but if I do, you'll all be the first to know how it goes.

Also note that if you don't take out the Super CDW, the car rental company will likely put a hold on your credit car for the amount of the deposit (probably about $1200). An important detail if you are planning to only use one card while traveling.

I had heard about that hold policy, Corey, but EuropCar didn't do that. We booked with them through Kemwel on this site.

I used the Diner's Club card, but didn't need to make a claim.

Dan Dooley put a hold on our cc because we didn't take their Super CDW.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. As we can see, each car company is different and has different rules for various things. The best advice is to find out as much as possible in advance so that you know what is going on. Read the fine print before making a decision.

Thanks everyone! Well, i think we're going to use insurance4carhire and waive Super CDW with Avis. Hopefully I won't be the first person to have to make a claim! :)

Erin,

I'm glad you finally made a decision on your car rental and insurance. I hope you don't have to make a claim either. We would enjoy hearing back from you after your trip. I'm sure you will have lots of tips to share!
