International calling card

Hi
Merle (veteran member) mentioned using an international calling card.  I wonder if it can be used  in Ireland and Sweden and Denmark (Copenhagen Airport).??
Anyone have experience with this.?
regards
-gary

I don't know. I wondered the same thing about the Republic.  I don't have my card to look at now.

Gary,

I can only tell you that the phone card you buy in Ireland does not work in No. Ireland so it obviously will not work in the other countries you are going to. I have heard that Costco sells an international phone card that people like. Perhaps you should check it out.

Didn't know you could by an international card here in the states and be able to  use it overseas.  Thought it had to be bought at place of calling origin/overseas .
  I'll check it out.
2 other options I'm looking into are a rental cell phone with upfront costs and $1.49 /min.

or upgrading my regular Verizon cell phone to a Global cell phone.  Can qualify for the $100 credit upgrade with the  VerizonWireless plan.  Verizon  will charge $1.29 /min when calling from Ireland and Sweden.  A little pricy still but could be more convenient. In addition the phone can also be used again in the states like any regular cell phone on my existing plan.

Gary,

Looks like you have some decisions to make. I'm sure once you sit down and figure out each plan, the costs and benefits you will find out which will work for you.

The Costco card is great. My wife uses it the rest of the year when calling her mother in ireland because it's the least expensive way of calling from the states too.

Greetings Roy,
Thanks for the info. I guess we all have different ways of global communication. We have the ATT (not sure if we should be more generic when talking co. names, Michele, you need to let us know) international line phone plan with 15 cents a minute to talk with our now Swedish (living/working) daughter.

Also, we did upgrade our cell phone for the global type phone with an installed Sim card. So I figure we are set for receiving and sending (short time) calls when in Europe while still enjoying its use here at home.

Gary,

No problem with naming phone companies, etc. I'm glad you settled on a plan. How cool that your daughter lives in Sweden. Is it temporary or permanent?

Hi Michele,

Thats nice of you to ask.  The short story (Ill try to keep short, not a blog) is Nancy got her Masters in Chem. Eng. from Brown U a number of years ago..   She then hooked up with a Ma. Co.  Following a couple of years their, she was asked to head up a 2 year Research Project at their R&R place in Halmstad , Sweden.  Thats where she fell in love with a swede named Jonas, pronounced Yonas.  Fullfilling her 2 year obligation, she returned home to the ma. co. absolutely crying her heart out.  She said Mom and Dad, Ive got to get back over their.  She subsequently got the paper work completed to transfer her work place from Ma. To Halmstad Sweden and also got her passport stamped with some kind of temporary residence permit.  As they say, the rest is history.  So now this visit we need to polish up on the Swedish language and Jonass parents need to polish up on the English language.  That will be interesting.

Sorry I got lengthy, but you asked. smile

BTW, do you have connection to a Scandanavian country??/

While I got your attention, Mary at Bunnratty Lodge answered some of my email ?? including remembering my wife (Mary) and I, from a past visit, for our next arrival into Shannon.  She has already rolled out the welcome mat.  What a gal!!!

Gary,

What a lovely story. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time in Sweden. Also, many more trips to plan there. I have a Scandinavian connection through my husband. All his ancestry is Norwegian and his father was born there. That's where my last name comes from although many people think it is German.

Mary has a mind like a steel trap! She remembers absolutley everything. So mind your p's and q's. wink (Just kidding.) She is a tourist's best friend and has great suggestions for the area. Her welcome mat is always there.

From Ireland you can try international phone cards from Epincall, if you use webcall from Ireland it's 4.4 cents almost 5 cents per minute, but when you buy phone cards it's almost 22 cents to USA, I'm not sure where you need to call but epincall offers very low rates.
