Can anyone give me information about golfing in Ireland. We are planning a 2 week trip in Oct. 08. Our plan is to golf 5 - 6 times and then follow up with sightseeing. However our main objective is to golf, golf and more golf. Any suggestions?
If you are anywhere near Rosses Point, the Sligo Golf Club is beautiful ! We stayed at the Yeats Country Hotel, which is next door. Everything was so easy to line up!
I have not yet been lucky enough to go on a golf vacation in Ireland, but dream of doing so one day. However, as a golfer, I know that when we drove by Lahinch, my jaw dropped! Talk about a one of a kind golf course! I would jump at the chance to play there. Also hear incredible things from a few coworkers and friends who have golfed at Doonbeg. And as far as sightseeing around these two courses, they are in a beautiful part of the country.
Welcome to my forum! As Bill has pointed out there are fabulous golf courses all over Ireland. Generally I find that golfers want to play links courses. One of the most beautiful courses I have ever seen is Old Head near Kinsale. But the price to play there is astronomical. There are plenty of lower cost courses too. It is just a matter of some research.
Call Tourism Ireland 1-800-223-6470 (US & Canada) for free brochures on golfing.
You have plenty of time for planning but you should know that the famous courses like Ballybunion, Old Head, Lahinch, etc. can have long waiting lists. You will want to book tee times at those as soon as you can.
I guess I should have given alittle more information. We are tentatively looking at the County Kerry area. We would definitely like to play the links courses but have also been told that the Woodland courses are beautiful also.
I couldn't help myself. As Michele said, Old Head is amazing and very expensive. Here is the link: http://oldhead.com/index.cfm
Some famous ones and they all turned up in the top 5 on visitireland.com:
Ballybunion on the coast north of the Dingle Peninsula. Royal County Down in NI Royal Portrush in NI Potmarnock outside of Dublin
I just saw that you responded while I was writing this.
Ballybunion is in Co Kerry. It is world famous and probably a great course and fairly expensive too. Truly a links course. The village of Ballybunion never does anything for me.
Killarney has a couple of beatiful parkland courses along the lakes. I believe it's the Killarney Golf Course that is on the road towards Dingle on the way out of town. These are parkland courses
There are two beautiful courses in Kenmare, one just east of town and one just west. They look out over Kenmare Bay and are stunning. There is another 9 hole Parknasilla (sp?) a little closer to Sneem.
Waterville Golf Club is out on the tip of the RoK. This is a links course and is considered one of the nicer links courses in the area.
On the Dingle Peninsula, there lies the Dingle Links, the most westerly course in Europe. The location is beautiful and if you get a day with low winds, the golf gods are smiling. This is a neat course. Also, on the north side of the peninusla are are the links at Castlegregory. Again, a links experience, perhaps a bit less windy than Waterville or Dingle.
The parkland courses (as they are called in Ireland) are beautiful too. The ones around Killarney are especially scenic. Bill has mentioned some of the best. Some others to consider in Kerry:
Tralee Fenit (this one is less well-known but lovely) Dooks Ring of Kerry
There are so many to choose from you may just have to extend your vacation!
