Killorglin as a base for the south west

We are thinking about renting a cottage in Killorglin,Kerry for a week in June. The second week will be with family in Leitrim.
This seems to be a good central location. We have been to the south west before(June 06).That time we did B&Bs which got old real fast traveling with kids in one room every night.
Has any one stayed in this area before?

Thanks
Susan

Susan,

A base that I have used for touring Counties Cork and Killarney was Croughmore, which is located just outside of Mitchelstown. I have recommended it to several families, as it gives them room to spread out and a sense of history, being a thatched cottage.

I was able to do day trips to Killarney National Park, Skellig, Cork City, Cobh, Cashel and Cahir. In a long day trip, I did Dingle for the first time and detrmined then and there that it deserved more than a day trip to truly experience it all.

Slan Beo (Take Care),

Thanks Bit for the link.I agree with you on how nice Dingle is.It is the reason I thought Killorglin would give us access to Dingle and the penninsulas.

In 06 we did
Cashel 1 night
Kinsale 1 night
Kenmare 2
Dingle 3 (1 at The Shores)

There is so much to do in that area I could spend the entire 2 weeks in the southwest.

We spent 1 week of our fifteen-day, '05 trip (the Guilty Pleasures Tour) at Riverside Holiday Homes, in Killorglin.

www.riverside-killorglin.com

It's about 20 - 30 minutes drive to Killarney and about 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours drive to Dingle town (with stops).  If Killarney and Dingle are your MAIN interests, it's a VERY GOOD location, but the SOUTHERn SW (Bantry, Kinsale, Glengarriff, etc.) would be a REAL stretch -- particularly during March.

Here's a link to my typically, over-long and overly detailed Trip Report for that trip, if you are interested (or BORED) ....

Susan,

How nice that you are returning to Ireland again. I agree with Bob that it depends on what you want to see in the area. Kilorglin can make a fine base depending on what you want to do. Can you tell us so we can better help?

On our first trip we fell in love with Dingle,so we would like to return there.
We only had 2 days in Kenmare so there is a lot in the area we missed.
Gap of dunloe
ROK
Healy Pass-did Beara but not Healy
Kilarney National Park
Ross Castle
Bantry
That is just a few things I can think of off the top of my head.
I would love to some how return to the Rock of Cashel even if it is a long day trip. The ROC was my favorite spot that we went to.

Nothing is set in stone yet except one week will be in Leitrim the other can be anywhere and the south west is pulling me.

Susan,

Since you want to do West Cork as well as Dingle I think you may be better off basing in Killarney. Look at your map. It is perfectly situated for day trips around the Cork/Kerry areas. If you don't mind adding perhaps another 2 hours or less to Cork day trips then Killorglin might suit.

Susan, We are making our next trip in March '08. We usually stay in self catering places for one week at a time and have really enjoyed it; however, if we go back next year we are just going to drive till dark and stop. Anyway, when in Kenmare we always enjoy eating at Prego for any of our meals, nice and cozy, good personnel. Jerry, the owner told us he also has a place called Bacus Bistro on the Main Street in Kenmare -- we were unable to be there at the right time, they just serve dinner. When checking it out, eventho we couldn't stay, it looked like a nice place. In case you haven't already tried them. I remember Kinsale having a really yummy bakery and it was so pretty on the shore. I agree that Kinsale would be quite a stretch. We were only able to be in Dingle for an afternoon and decided to stay in a self catering house for a week this time and see a lot more of the peninsula. Have fun! Another neat area is Adare. We will be staying for one night when we first arrive. It is one place we want to explore (Adare) while staying in Corofin: burrenholidayhome. If you look up this site, when it opens just click on Holiday Home in strip near top. Maybe check it out for your next trip
