1st trip to Ireland - have a few questions!

This will be my first trip to Ireland and I am so excited!  I am traveling with five friends, ages ranging from late 20's to early 60's.  I have spent a lot of time reading through the posts on Michelle's site and have learned a lot that will be very helpful (I also purchased her book).  We will be in Ireland for most of the month of March.  I have a few questions I am hoping that I can get some advice/answers for.

B&B vouchers - I have read some negative things about the voucher system for B&B's but unfortunately that is what the group decided to go with and I am stuck with using the vouchers.  Any advice?  We will book prior to leaving and confirm 24 hours in advance as suggested.  We also plan on spending more than one night at each B&B, some 3 or 4 nights and I have to thank you for this suggestion.  If I hadn't read the recommendation here we would have changed B&B's each night.

B&B Kells Country House - has anyone stayed here?www.kellscountryhouse.com  The group wants to stay here and I can not find ANY reviews of this B&B.

Is it really a good idea to bring gifts to B&B owners and not tip?  If so, what do you feel are the best gifts to bring?

Thank you for any advice you can share!

texaslrc,

Welcome to my forum! Almost a month in Ireland - no wonder you are excited.

Your first post and you already know a lot from your research. If you have read the post about B&B etiquette you will know that it is not necessary to bring gifts to B&B owners. You are paying for your B&B, not family guests that are staying free.

Vouchers can be a problem especially during the season. However, you are going in March and there is less competition for rooms (except around St. Patrick's Day and Easter). If you are staying in Dublin they will be a big problem and I would suggest you upgrade to hotel vouchers if Dublin is in your itinerary.

Kells is relatively new (open a couple of years) and that may be why there are no reviews. It is very difficult to find since it is out in the countryside and behind a big wall and gate. When I was there it had no B&B sign just the name Kells on a stone plaque. No one was home so I could not see it. That's all I know about it.

If you are planning on a castle banquet or Irish Night at Bunratty you may want to stay a bit closer to Bunratty.

Michele
