Has anyone noticed a corrolation, if there is one, between the arrival time at Shannon Airport and the quality of rental car that you get? Is it the early bird gets the best cars or does it matter? For instance, arrival time of 7:00 am would get a better car than the car you would get by arriving at 11:00 am?
While I guess that could be something that affects it, the bigger factor is who you rent from. I've found that the big chains like Hertz have often much older fleets than local companies like Dooley. That has been my take during the several trips there, and I've rented from both a couple of times.
Good car rental companies will have the car you reserved at the time of your arrival. That is why they usually want to know what flight you are on in case you are delayed.
I agree with Sidz that Hertz has an older fleet. I have been using Kemwel for the past several years and am very happy with the cars, service and especially the prices. You can click through to them from my Car Rental page. Be sure to read the whole page before renting.
I just emailed Kemwel and rented a car based on Michele's book. I also got a world visa card so I will not have to pay the extra insurance on the car. It is going to save us a few hundred dollars. You do however need to bring a letter from your credit card company stating that they will cover the insurance.
In '03 we reserved a vehicle early enough for Hertz to have it built on the spot by the time we arrived, but all Hertz in Shannon could do for 5 zaftig women and their luggage was a Land Rover and not too gracious about that. In Killarney two days later we were finally supplied with a Ford Tourneo which was wonderful, and the people were extremely nice.
Kemwel/EuropCar was much better in '07.
I liked driving the Land Rover and it would have been wonderful for 3 or even 4 people with less luggage.
I believe Canadian Visa cards may stil cover in Ireland. However for those of us in the US it is only a very few MasterCards: World MasterCard (certain ones) and some business cards. Diners Club covers CDW too but many places do not accept them.
I just reserved a car from Dan Dooley's for our trip in May. I checked out several different companies, but for me Dooley's website was by far the best since it gave me the total price for all the add-ins unlike some of the companies that quote you the basic price and say they will add the insurance or a 2nd driver when you arrive. Their rate was also the best I found, and I was able to use a 10% discount from a website I found called www.dochara.com. I had already received a quote before finding the discount and then ran it again with the discount code. It made a nice difference. Also, by calling them on the phone I was able to make the reservation without putting it on my credit card. They have an 800 U.S. number and told me to call 3 weeks before the trip and give them my creidt card number then. Just thought I'd pass this on for anyone looking for rental info.
