Connemara loop

Can anyone give me some help on the Connemara loop? How long does it usually take to drive and see? I haven't done a TON of research on it yet. So far, the only thing we had wanted to see was the Kylemore Abbey. We're trying to figure out whether we can do it while we are in Galway, and what else we will be able to do. Our timeline for the stay in Galway is:

Saturday, June 21st - drive from Dublin to Galway (planning to get moving at a decent hour in the morning
Sunday - Galway
Monday - at some point leave Galway for Doolin

Somewhere in there, we need to see my friend's family who live outside of Galway, north about 30 - 45 minutes or so. We're not sure when we'll be seeing them yet, but if we were to see them Sunday morning, would Connemara be possible in the afternoon or does it really need a whole day? I've tried to find information on line, and it seems some people spend days in Connemara, and some people do it in a few hours, so I'm not sure what to think!

Across from Kylemore Abbey is the Connemara Visitors' Centre with an interesting interpretive area and then two nature walks, and a tea room. You could spend some time there. The "short walk" is nice, through wooded areas, but very vertical in some places.

We allocated one full day to Connemara on our trip last October. All the members of our party felt we spent the correct amount of time there, one day out of 11. It is one of those places (like many in Ireland) that you could spend an incredible amount of time and still not necessarily see everything.Taking just the National Park, as an example, I could wander for 2-3 days and not be bored; we just didn't have that much time to spend (maybe next trip). Well, my friend is now insisting that we see her family on Sunday morning. So if we're going to do Connemara at all, it will either be that afternoon, or the Saturday afternoon, or Monday morning before leaving for Doolin. Should we just scrap it? Or is it possible to see some of Connemara? Is it possible to see some of it without driving the whole loop?

Dear Carrie,

Why not wait until that Sunday to see how things are going. Talk to the relatives, I'm sure they will have suggestions. There will always be another trip, we all return. Have a wonderful time, enjoy the lovely Irish people and the scenery you do see.

Best of Luck, Joan

It depends on the friends. If your visit is not too long, you could take a driving tour through Connemara on Sunday afternoon. Daylight will last well into the evening (8-9:00 pm?) Alternatively, the drive to Doolin is not too long, so if you would rather see Connemara than sitesee on the way to Doolin, you could tour Connemara on Monday and then drive to Doolin. I wouldn't recommend trying to do it the same day you drive from Dublin.

Is the visit to the friends north up the east side of Galway? If so, you will take extra time driving back through Galway and over to Connemara.

I think a drive through Connemara is worth it. You could make a loop going part way up the coast and then back through the interior. It's all beautiful.

With only a part day, I would choose to either see Kylemore Abbey, going directly there, or a driving tour just ogling the scenery with stops. The Abbey and grounds needs 2-3 hours to see properly. The coastline and some of it's villages are wellworth seeing. Inland, Ballynahinch Lodge is a good stop with beautiful gardens and grounds. Cong village is also worth seeing, with a ruined abbey in its center, the grounds of Ashford castle, and a river walk.

Carrie,

To properly see Connemara you need a whole day. I suspect that your friends family will take up most of the day. In Ireland there is no such thing as a quick visit. Scrap Connemara.
