On our trip this Fall, we are considering a focus on the southern coastal area -- a place we have never been to before. After landing in Shannon, we plan to make our way south for a day or so, eventually arriving in Kinsale, and maybe west from there head to villages like Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Baltimore, etc. Also Mizen Head one day.
Are these good areas to spend some time in? I thought perhaps I would then head north to Kenmare, Killarney, and eventually back to Shannon.
We will be in Ireland nine days.
Anyone with experience in these areas, or a recommended itinerary would be appreciated. We plan to stay in B&B accomodations. I've spent a great deal of time in Ireland in the Clare, Kerry, Mayo regions, but really nothing of substance on the south coast, so I thought this might be something worthwhile.
The coast of West Cork is just lovely. You could spend your whole time there. Besides the places you mentioned you should pop down to Castletownshend. It is a place that time forgot. There is even a tree growing in the middle of the main street. Go to Mary Anne's pub for banoffee.
If the weather is right on the drive down to Mizen Head be sure to stop off at Barley Cove Beach. Wonderful.
If you like gardens:
Bantry House & Gardens Ilnacullin Gardens on Garinish Island (near Glengarriff) Derreen Gardens (Lauragh on Beara Pen.)
Appreciate the comments -- sounds great, and I'll start some research on the places you mentioned. I once heard that this region of Ireland is often overlooked, and from what I've read, the areas sound wonderful.
I'll also check out your B&B recommendations for that region as well.
Started contacting some places for B&Bs -- looked at PK Lodge in Skibbereen that you had on the site -- that place looks terrific. Can you walk to town from there, or do you need to take the car?
Sidz, Glad you are going to the Southern part this trip. We have generally stayed in the Southern area for three trips. From Kensale to Westport and the areas in between. Skibberean is such a nice place to walk and take it easy. At the main market, you can sit in their little cafe, at the front of the store and enjoy a yummy pastry, lite lunch or even breakfast sandwiches and wonderful coffee! If you are in Kenmare during the time of day to eat, the Prego Cafe is nice and has good food (we mainly stay in self catering; thus my mentioning places to eat!) Mizen Head is okay. The view/s are beautiful, but the only thing we were going for was the lighthouse at the end. If we had been physically able, we would certainly have walked across the suspension bridge to the light house --- all down hill. So we just enjoyed chatting in the little cafe, nice sandwiches, instead of making the walk. If you get along the coast and go to Cliffs of Moher, there is a wonderful cafe on the water and really good B&B in the town of Kinvara --www.conneelysbedandbreakfast.com cafe: http://www.kinvara.com/eatpierhead.html Just south of Cliff of Moher there is a really nice rock shop www.therockshop.ie (if you have a chance see my breakdown of places on the forum "3rd. trip". The West is very nice, we really enjoy it a lot. youngka

Thanks for some ideas -- I appreciate it. Planning is such a fun part of the process! And I'm always ready to go back, especially to new parts that I can enjoy getting to know.
If you are looking to stay in Skibbereen, you might look to Sunnyside B&B. I only stayed the one night, but found it convenient to town centre. The rooms were comfortable and the beds not too firm nor too soft. The breakfast was delicious and great care was taken to make sure no mushrooms came in contact. That always earns extra bonus points.
Thanks Bit. I always prefer a B&B that is within walking distance of the pubs and shops. When I get back from a day of seeing the countryside, I like to park the car for the evening.
You mention a trip in Oct. Same for us. Where are you planning to go?
Sunnyside is definitely within walking distance of a pub, as there is one at the top of the road it is on, as is Town Centre.
Here is my tentative Itinerary. Good Friends of mine have just moved back to Letterkenny, so I may be adding days and staying with them a bit longer. I have also thought about doing Westport instead of Inis Mor. However, my heart always takes me to Inis Mor. So we shall see, once I get my rental car, I could wind up anywhere the faeries lead me!
Oct 4 & 5 - Inis Mor (Kelly's) Oct 6 & 7 - Roscommon (Gleeson's) October 8 & 9 - Donegal October 10 - BallyCastle (Crockatinny) October 11 & 13- Keady (Family Farm) October 14 & 15 - Kilkenny (Lawcus Farms) October 16 & 17 - Dingle (Blooming Wildflower) October 18 - Bunratty
