Kemwell, calculating "extras"

Whew! Renting a car wasn't so difficult back in 2004. I'm all confuzzled.

I've got a quote from Kemwell--and 7 other companies. weirdfaceThe Kemwell quote is with Avis.

All of the other companies' web sites give details about how much the "extras" (Super CDW, personal accident insurance, etc.) will cost, plus how much the deductibles are under the different insurance categories. I haven't been able to find deductibles on the Avis site, and it states that the "extras" are "available locally." This doesn't help me estimate a bottom-line cost for the Kemwel rental, so I may have to exclude them from the list.

Does anyone have an idea of what the cost of the "extras," the deductibles, etc. might be?

I know I could probably pick up the phone and *call* Avis...but I'm trying to avoid the phone. And I've only got two weeks to suss it all out.

Thanks in advance!

Willie,

Welcome the the car rental maze. You must jump through hoops lately to rent a car in Ireland. That is why I tried to explain it all logically on my "Car Rental" page.

When I rent with Kemwel it has always been through Europcar. Evidently your quote is with Avis. They shop the various car companies to get the lowest rates.

I just looked at the Avis site and can find nothing either. I did find somthing that said there are different charges for different car types as far as deductibles, insurance, etc. So perhaps that is why you must call. If you do not want to phone Avis then I suggest you just cross Kemwel and Avis off your list and go on to the next one.

Good luck with finding the best rental at the lowest rates.

Michele

I too am stuck in this same maze.  I will probably buy the Super CDW when I go in September.  I can find the cost of the Super CDW at Dan Dooley, Irish Car Rental, etc., but could not find it with Kemwell.  I called Kemwell and they advised that when I booked with them, they would then tell me who was going to furnish the car and I would have to contact that company and find out from them how much the Super CDW was going to cost.  The Super CDW varies from between 25 EURO per day and 11.5 EURO per day depending on the company.  If they booked me with a company and I called them and they wanted to charge me 25 EURO per day, then I am stuck.  I guess they only thing to do then is cancel with Kemwell and find somebody else.

I know it is a problem but I would like to know what that Super CDW is going to cost me before I get there.

Kemwel has a "booking engine". As such I don't think the people at Kemwel know in advance which car rental company that automated machine will book you with. Once the booking is made you and Kemwel know the name of the company, whether it is Europcar, Avis, or someone else.

At that time you can see what the extra charges are. If you don't like them it is easy enough to cancel the reservation immediately. I have canceled Kemwel before and the process is quick and painless. There are no charges to cancel with Kemwel. Be careful with other companies because some do have "cancelation charges".

Read the fine print!

And don't forget about www.insurance4carhire.com

Michele, you might just be my favorite person on the whole planet at this very moment. clap.gif

I had forgotten all about insurance4hire. Ugh!

Let me make sure I have this concept straight in my addled brain. If I buy the insurance4hire policy, I'll still want to go with the CDW, but won't have to purchase the "extras." Is that correct?

Last time we traveled, my niece's MC covered everything in Ireland, so we didn't have to be concerned with all of the extras. Unfortunately, they've changed their policy since then. But I think that with Michele's reminder, things have just become a bit easier!!!

Thanks, Michele!!!!! biggrin

Willie,

You have made my day! biggrin It is so nice to be someone's favorite person.

You need to buy the CDW. Insurance4CarHire fills the gap between CDW and Super CDW. With CDW you still have a deductible of 800-1,500. If you have an accident they will pay the deductible portion. They also cover things like tires, glass, undercarriage that almost no insurance covers.

I have recently become an affiliate of Insurance4CarHire but haven't had the time to put the link on my website yet. If you click here I will get a few pennies from the sale but you will pay no more: www.insurance4carhire.com/irelandyes

If you purchase the coverage be sure to bring the terms with you just in case you need them.

Once again, Michele, THANK YOU!!! clap.gif

I clicked your affiliate link, and my policy document is printing at this very moment. I'll keep it with my other travel docs.

The lowest rate that I've seen on car rental websites so far for the Super CDW is $138.44 for our 11-day rental period--more than the cost of this policy--and as you pointed out, the Super CDW doesn't cover tires, glass and undercarriage. Sure looks like a bargain to me!

Willie,

I hope you don't have to make a claim! If you do you will be the forum guinea pig and will have to let us know how the process went. We have yet to have a forum member collect on the insurance. No accidents so far and counting.

Michele & Willie, In March, we had National Car Rental. Wasn't bad at all. Next time we will get an automatic and maybe get a larger car. Mileage on the car was very good! For 33 days, I think we paid about 300 - 400 Euros, maybe less, for gas & we drove a lot. That was with insurance. We ended up going thru a local travel agent -- here in Washington state, for our plane tickets and the car rental because both were cheaper than we could find. National's 800# is1-800-223-5555, in Portland, Maine. They will transfer you if necessary. Total cost for 33 days, including sales tax & insurance was (and after a discount by the travel agency) (discount of $106.82) total was $1,228.45 for a Opel Vectra-4 door, stick shift. youngka
