Anyone in the States - a cheaper way to call Ireland??

Hi everyone,

As you may or may not know I will be in Ireland in May for 10 days.  I called in February to get the B&B's reserved - I just got my phone bill - and for 5 calls under 2 minutes each its 60$!!!!

Does anyone know of a cheaper way (be it calling cards, a special number you dial) to call oversees?  I have to call to confirm our reservations in a couple of weeks and with exchange rates, etc, I dont want to have to drop another 60 dollars!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!!

You can get an international calling card. I use Mobile Caller. Ok, so it's not actually a physical calling card like we had in the old days :), you can get them online now, and it will give you an 800 number to call, enter your pin, dial the number, and you're in business!

I haven't reloaded in a while, so I'm not sure of the rates, it seems like I usually get 120 minutes for $20 or so. But I believe you can also buy less (or more) at a time. www.MobileCaller.com

Other people might know of other online sites with better rates, also if you don't want to do it online, I think you can buy calling cards in stores that have international calling capabilities as well.

Your problem is with your long distance carrier. We use TTI National for our long distance. We pay 6.5 cents per minute for calls in the US and 10 cents per minute for calls overseas. We don't pay any monthly fee either, or have any monthly minimums. We don't make many calls during the year, mostly just to Ireland to book B&B's, and a few "rogue" calls within the states during the year. I usually end up spending $15-$20 for the whole year. You may want to check into it.

Loelle,

As mentioned on my "Tips & Tricks" page you can choose a dial-around service: http://www.10-10phonerates.com/

All the various answers are good. You just have to choose what works best for you.

Thank you everyone - I will research all my options and see which seems to be the best fit.

It may not always be real convenient, but nothing is cheaper than Skype. I called a hostel in Co. Clare a few weeks ago to arrange a stay and it was 2 cents ($0.02 USD) per minute to call.

Skype is free computer-to-computer, but still very cheap computer-to-phone. You can find it at www.skype.org.

You'll of course need a computer, internet connection and microphone/speaker setup. It's not always convenient, but even if it only works for you part of the time it's an excellent deal.

Good luck...

Hi Michele,

That was a fast reply! I wasn't initially planning on taking my laptop on our trip but it'll be worth it for calling back to the States.

By the way, why can't I post? Are the forums setup a certain way or is it my account? I want to start a thread on car rental advice, but I can't see how to post.

Thanks

P.S. - Never mind. Of course I don't see the link until I already ask!

Hi, Loelle:

I am a bit late here...just saw this today.. I use Sprint, and I only pay $4.00per month to call Ireland.  The minutes don't even count.  That's it - $4.00/mo.
I use a cell phone exclusively.  Hope this helps.  Have a wonderful trip.
