Can you tell me a good Ireland Road Atlas to buy and where I can obtain one? I think looking at a spiral bound, or similiar bound, road atlas in the car would be better than a large fold out map. An atlas might also be a little more detailed. I have looked at Barnes & Noble, etc., but can't find one.
I have read and heard that there are good ones when you arrive at the airport. That is what i am planning on doing when I land. :) Have fun on your trip!
I have a spiral road atlas of Great Britain and Ireland from Michelin.I bought it at Boarders, they have a area near the travel guides where they keep all the maps(very large selection). We used it on our first trip and was easy to use because it was a spiral book.It was 20 dollars in 2006 and with the exchange rate getting worse every day I would try to get it here. Susan
The OSI spiral map that Michele referred to is EXCELLENT. The shop in Shannon just opposite from the Car Hire desks has a rack full of them. Last time that I checked (about two years ago) they were 12 Euro 70. I'm sure they've gone up some - probably closer to 15 Euro, now - and I'm sure they are also available in the Dublin airport, as well.
Because of the TYPE of travelling that I do (and the type of individual that I am) I have been working on accummulation an entire SET of the FULL OSI maps, which are, BAR NONE, the ULTIMATE Ireland maps. I don't usually recommend them to others, though, because: 1) They are FOLD OUT maps. 2) They are EXPENSIVE -- between 6 and 8 Euro EACH ! 3) There are 89 of them ! ! ! !
But, if you positively, absolutely MUST know EVERY road, EVERY stream and EVERY rock (natural, AND archeological), NOTHING else even comes close.
If the spiral Michelin is available to you locally, it IS pretty good -- go for it. You could always buy the OSI later, too.
Can you ever have too many maps????

Thanks everyone for the help on the Road Atlas. It looks like I will be buying one at Shannon Airport. I have a Michelin map of Ireland that is probably OK but when you fold it out, it would cover the roof of the car. I was looking for something more user friendly to use inside a car and a small car at that.
I think you could be perfectly happy with the Michelin map. Go to your local copy center and copy sections of the map. Blow it up by 150% and you will have a sheet that will probably include most of your driving and sightseeing for the day. In that way you make your own atlas.
I used the OSI spiral (1:210,000) and found it excellent. Also backed up by a select few of the osi discovery series (1:50,000), they are the ultimate. I agree with Bob, you can't have too many maps. WC
Just a note that the tourist office in Shannon Airport has really downsized and currently only has some brochures available. However, the bookstore and other shops will have the Atlas.
