Michele, we are traveling to Ireland next month. I contacted Johnny at Irish Folk Tours for an evening activity in Dublin, but unfortunately he does not offer his folk tour on Sunday evening when we will be in the city. I asked for some other suggestions, and I wanted to know if there is something that you or your customers might recommend. Johnny suggested The Irish House Party, Merry Plough Boys, Jameson Whiskey and the Irish Nights at the Arlington Hotel. Is anyone familiar with these? Any other suggestions? Thanks
Hello! I strongly, strongly recommend that you do NOT go to see the Merry Ploughboys. They pump out a whole bunch of songs with tons of energy, but with very little feeling or soul. When we saw them, they did little to hide the fact that they felt they were playing to "tourists" whom they did not feel they had to respect too much, and the music suffered from that attitude. They were quite obviously very capable musicians, but the feeling wasn't there. You cannot pretend to have the right feeling while performing music. You either have it or you don't.
On the other hand, I do recommend with all my heart that you go to the Musical Pub Crawl. There you will hear the real thing. We had a magnificent evening attending it. It's easy to find in Temple Bar.
Thanks for the review of the Merry Ploughboys. I had a similar experience recently in Dingle where most of the musicians gave half-hearted performances and had definite attitudes. Maybe it is tourist overload? Although there were plenty of locals at the church in Dingle.
Thanks for the info, we will be leaving in just about a week and are very excited about our Ireland Adventure. I think we might just wait and decide what to do once we are in Dublin. We have 2 nights there and none of the options sound quite as good as Michelle's original suggestion of the Irish Folk Evening with Johnny.
We will be traveling to Dingle, Kenmare, and Cashel as well so if there are any other 'must see' suggestions out there I would love to hear them. It will be myself, husband and 18 year old son... So not everything is going to thrill a teen.
Hi Michele You had that on our itinerary but unfortunately they do not start until the next week after we leave. Guess our timing on some of the activities were not the best, but I am sure it will be a great trip.
Has anyone been on the "Ghost Bus" in Dublin? It's a 2 hr. 15 min. tour at 25 euro per person. It looks interesting - maybe a bit silly - but I was wondering if anyone had done it? The site is: http://www.dublinbus.ie/sightseeing/
Bru Boru has different opening times each year. It is impossible to predict when they will open and close. Sorry it won't work for your trip. It is an excellent evening.
Be sure to ask in each place you stay what is on in town. If the B&B owners don't know go to the tourist office. Many pubs will post notices out front of music and sessions.
Yes I checked with Joys Rock House (where we are staying) and she is the one that confirmed that the show was starting the next weekend. But I will check when I get to different destinations to see what is happening. WOW I can not believe we are leaving a week from today. Thanks again
If Joan at Joy's Rockside House confirmed the dates then they are accurate. I am wishing you the best trip ever. Do let us know how it goes when you return.
