Accommodation in Cork City for family with young child?

Hiya

We are staying in Cork City for 4 nights from Sunday May 25th. I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a B&B or hotel?

There's me and my partner, and we have a 3 year old child, meaning one (or both) of us will have to stay in the room or nearby every evening to make sure our daughter is OK.

I looked at Michele Erdvig's reccomended lodgings list, but she doesn't list anything in Cork City. I've also done a search in this forum, but no Cork City reccomendations came up.

Michele Erdvig does suggests Woodlands House, near Cork in Kinsale, which looks nice, as it seems to be central in the town. However, we're a little concerned about getting to Kinsale as we don't drive. Also we're vegetarian, and while there should be veggie restaurants in Cork, we're concerned there won't be many eating out options for veggies in Kinsale.

In Cork City, we found Gresham Metropole, and are thinking of booking it as it's very central, and near the shopping, meaning we can take turns going out and childminding for a few hours. However, there's many online reviews saying the rooms are small, which means it won't be much fun for the person staying in.

In short, we're looking for a place with character, not chinzy, with space for the person staying in, suitable for a family with no car. Bit of a tall order.

Any suggestions? Advice on places to eat that do good veggie eating would be good too.

Many thanks

Tom + Paula

Tom & Paula,

First off, welcome to the forum!

Kinsale is one of teh gourmet capitols of Ireland. You would find many vegetarian options there. Toddies and Crackpots both have excellent vegetarian selections.

There is bus service in between Cork and Kinsale. You can always ask your lodgings host for a reputable sitter. There is always a girl or two they know who will allow you an hour or two out together at a reasonable price.

I would choose Kinsale over Cork t'were it me traveling with a small child, as it is a much slower pace and more ocmpact, as well.  If looking to Kinsale, you might want to check out The White Lady Hotel. It has an excellent restaurant. The rooms are comfortable and the staff is terrific. It is right on the harbour which is a major plus. Tierney's might be another to check out.

Many thanks CowboyCraic for your fab reply, lots of helpful info.

I've emailed the White Lady for availability and more info as we couldn't find any photos of their rooms on their website.

Have to decide between Cork and Kinsale - do you have any lodging commendations for Cork? Reading between the lines, you seem to be saying 'don't bother with Cork' :)

Many thanks

Dear Thomas and Paula,

Cork City is a great city for walking and they have a hop-on/hop-off bus service for seeing the sights.

I'd recommend Lancaster Lodge - a very good guesthouse on Western Rd., next to Jurys Hotel. See www.Lancaster Lodge.com

It also happens to be across the street from the best vegetarian restaurant in Cork (and some say, in the country): Cafe Paradiso - www.cafeparadiso.ie.

Hope this helps.....

Tom and Paula,

My thanks to Bit and Pat for answering your questions while I was away from the forum for a few days. Did you know you can also stay at Cafe Paradiso?
http://www.cafeparadiso.ie/stay That may just be the perfect solution.

Cork is a large and busy city but there is lots to do there. If you choose Kinsale then Woodlands wold be a good choice as it is walking distance to town. Some rooms are larger than others and if you decide on that, request a larger room. Nearby is Landfall House, which is nice too.

There is no problem getting a vegetarian breakfast at B&Bs. Just inform your hosts in advance of your requirements. Most restaurants in Ireland have vegetarian options on the menu or will do them as a special request.

Are you working within a certain budget for your lodging?

Please let us know if you need more help choosing where to stay.

Michele
