First Trip to Emerald Isle

Michele,
I have truly enjoyed perusing your forums over the past few months in preparation for our trip to Ireland on 22 July. My wife depends upon my planning and while it verges on obsession at times, we have always had good times! I fully intend on posting a trip report when my trip ends...I only hope that we will not want it to end. I have all of my B&B's booked with impetus from this forum and TripAdvisor along the way. Since our whirlwind honeymoon in Europe in which we traveled far too much, we have tried to always find bases in which we stay a minimum of two days and preferably three. While I have many ideas already, I think that I may like to hear further ideas on my itinerary.
Day 1: Fly to Dublin after arrival at London Gatwick, staying in Malahide at Belcamp Hutchinson for two nights. Will explore Dublin itself and surrounding areas..Wicklow etc..
Day 3: Leave for Kinsale, perhaps leaving time for an exploration of Cork along the way...taking the inland route. Staying at Desmond House for Three nights. Will visit Cobh, Cork...possibly Waterford, but possibly not. Will head west to visit some of the peninsulas before heading to Dingle. Advice on some of the southern sites to see would be appreciated short of kissing the Blarney stone...we don't care to do so.
Day 6: Drive to Dingle..staying three nights at Emlagh Lodge. Driving Dingle peninsula and ring of Kerry.
Day 9: Drive to Clifden...a long drive so we're not sure that too many stops will be possible. Staying at farmhouse B&B; Faul House in Clifden. Will drive, hike, horseback ride etc.. around the area and possibly go northward into Mayo?Achill.
Day 12: Drive to Bunratty for two nights b4 heading home from Shannon. Visit county Clare for Cliffs of Moher and surrounding coastline.

I look forward to any further suggestions or comments.

jsnic,

Welcome to my forum! I like your style of staying put for two and three nights. I think it enhances any trip.

Will you have a car while staying near Malahide? Since it is the burbs you will most likely need one for going into the village and evening dining. You can easily fill two days with just Dublin.

When you are in KInsale you can take a ferry across the river to Cobh and avoid lots of Cork traffic. Currently downtown Kinsale's streets are torn up but perhaps by the time you get there all will be in order. Near Kinsale is Charles Fort and James Fort, also Old Head of Kinsale. There is a pretty drive along the coast to Timoleague and its abbey. South of Clonakilty is Inchydoney Island, which has a fantastic beach. The little towns of Glandore and Union Hall are very picturesque. You can't go wrong with the whole cost of West Cork.

I think your plan sounds very good. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Michele

Michele,

Thank you for the advice. We will have a car straight from the airport and we are thrilled that we can bypass Dublin from the airport, and are only 10 minutes away. We have been told by our innkeeper that a bus route straight into Dublin is located just near their entrance. We are thinking of letting the rental car sit for that first afternoon and buying tickets on Dublin bus' City Tour (Hop-on, Hop-off) to see the sights of Dublin. I have driven in Australia a few years back, but spending the first day in City traffic is not my idea of fun! The additional southern destinations are much appreciated, and while I had thought about ferries in Clare/Kerry, I didn't realize the option for Cobh. I am thinking about ordering one of your maps to give myself a bit more confidence in my navigation. I will most likely purchase a spiral Ordnance Survey map upon my arrival, but some customized guidance would give me some peace of mind. What info do you need to put this together. We arrive on July 23 into Dublin.

Thank you,

Jim S

Jim,

In order to complete a map for you I need the following:

Your itinerary with overnight stays and daily sightseeing
Any special drives and/or routes you want to take
Any roads you want to avoid
Special needs you might have that would impact the chosen route

It will help if you can break your itinerary down day-by-day like this:

9-4-04: Arrive Shannon DOOLIN (the bold caps would indicate an overnight stay)

Sightseeing:

Bunratty Castle & Folk Park
Cliffs of Moher
Poulnabrone Dolmen
Aillwee Cave
Coast route to see the Burren

You can contact me privately from this page: http://www.irelandyes.com/contact.html
