Yes Ireland first banned smokeless tobacco in 1988 and the US tobacco companies sued and won. In 1991, a second rewritten ban went into effect and tobacco companies again sued and lost. Do a search on smokeless tobacco ban.

Wow,

Nothing was ever said to either of our party who had chewing tobacco. Of course we have manners and spitting on sidewalks or on inside floors would be something not done. Though we carried our own over. Tobacco products are expensive enough here. Over there, its even worse!

Interesting that they banned one form of tobacco and not the other. weirdface

so can you purchase chewing tobacco anywhere or must you bring it with you? Is it diffferent in Northern Ireland vs Republic?

seems odd that you could bring it but not be able to buy it anywhere - this is what I have been told

Welcome to my forum! You have received up to date info about smokeless tobacco. You cannot buy it in Ireland or Northern Ireland. The EU banned it in 1992 in the Eurozone with the exception of Sweden. You will have to take your own.

It may be odd but back a few decades contraceptives were illegal in Ireland. Although you could bring your own!!

Don't remember seeing Smokeless Tobacco offered in the Duty Free on the plane, but didn't really look. Regular Cigarrettes WERE, but they were still at, or about the same as I pay for them, at home in Florida -- about $35 a carton, or $3.50 per pack.

Individual packs of cigarrettes in the Republic, at least, are currently selling for just under 7 Euro (approximately $9 US) per pack.

I bring my own.
