Restaurants and Pubs

My wife and I along with our two best friends are traveling to Ireland on Aug. 15th.  We will be there two weeks.  Our time will be concentrated in Southwest and Western Ireland.  We have a cottage rented near Sneem and another one in Clifden.  Would someone be kind enough to recommend restaurants and pubs that you think are special in the following areas.  Kinsale, Cork, Killarney,Kenmare, Sneem, Waterville, Galway, Clifden,Cong etc.  Obviously these are just towns that will most likely be on our drive routes.  It is so nice to visit a new place and have suggestions from people who have actually visited before.  I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.

Maybe off you route a tad, but in Balilna, Gaughan's is a favorite. The owner Ed Gaughan loves to gab about his world famous Irish Coffee, and his wife prepares wonderful food.

If you venture through Leenane, Gaynor's is another favorite.

Quays Bar is my favorite in Galway, but there are many, many good one is that great city!
Cheers!

Mark, thank you very much for getting this started for us.  You are very kind to do this.  I am not sure we would make it up to Balilna but Leename and Galway are certainly a possibility.  Thanks again.
I am anxious to hear from others about their favorites in those areas that I mentioned.  We love to experience the local flavor of the area.

Denny,

Welcome to my forum! It sounds like a fun trip. You will have to let us know how you liked the self-catering places that you chose.

Just off the top of my head:

Kenmare: Prego, Lime Tree

Killarney: Bricin, Murphy's

Cahirciveen: The Point

Kinsale: Man Friday, Hoby's

Clifden: Mitchell's

Cong: Hungry Monk

Have fun eating your way through Ireland!

Michele

Michelle,  thanks so much for your reply as well.  You might think that all we are interested in is eating and drinking!  Actually we are very excited to see all of the wonderful sites or southwest and western Ireland.  It makes the trip even more special when you can enjoy the finer things in life such as eating as well.  We love to talk about these places when we return home.  Thanks again and for anyone who might like to suggest others, PLEASE do so.  Thanks Michelle for making this site available.

Hi Denny,

In Kinsale, my husband and I enjoyed our dinner at The Shack (on Main St) so much that we returned the next night. Not advertised as one of Kinsale's "Gourmet" restaurants, but great food at comfortable prices. Very welcoming place, too.

If you happen to be going through Kinsale on a Tuesday when they're having their farmers' market in Market Square, do stop and have a look! Lucky for us, strawberries were in season when we were there and they were delicious! We went when they were first setting up, so we didn't get to sample the many things it looked like they were cooking up for lunchtime.

Dear KelliJo,
Thank you very much for your recommendation in Kinsale.  I find that recommendations from these forums are usually very good.  We went to Italy and Greece last year and had some wonderful places to eat thanks to message boards.  I will definitely add this one from you to our list in Kinsale.
Thanks again,
Denny

Denny,

I know that eating is as important a part of any trip as the sightseeing. wink Glad we could help with a few suggestions. You can also ask locals and at tourist offices for suggestions.

I think you will have great fun self-catering in Ireland. Staying put for a week at a time gives you a sense of "home". Which places have you chosen for your trip?

Michele, we are getting so anxious to leave for Ireland.  We are flying into Shannon and will work our way down through Adare to our cottage near Sneem on Kenmare Bay.  We will be there for one week.  While operating out of this cottage we will visit Cork, Kinsale, Ring Of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula, Bantry Bay, Glengariff, Blarney Castle, Killarney National Park, Muckross House, Gap of Dunloe, Skellig Rocks? and others that we may or may not have time to do.  Depends on the weather.
We will then head north to west Ireland where we have a cottage rented for a week in Clifden.  From there I will play golf one day at Connemara Golf Club.  We plan on seeing the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren enroute to Clifden.  While in this area we want to visit Galway city, Connemara National Park, Leenane, Sky road out of Clifden, Cong, some coastal road driving, Kylemore Abby.  Two nights we will be staying at the Ashford Castle and plan on doing the Lake Corrib cruise.  We also plan on visiting the Aran Islands.

So, you can see that with all of that travel, we will be hungrysmile
Comments are always welcome.  Thanks for asking.

Denny,

Sounds fantastic. I will be wishing for some good weather for you. If you have time and a good day I highly recommend Achill Island. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Atlantic Drive is beautiful.

Hello KelliJo In Clifden "Off the Square" restaurant was good. Met a very nice lady of a little cafe across the bridge in Sneem--Country Kitchen? -- not real sure of the name any more -- but as you leave the center of town and go over the bridge with the beautiful river, her cafe was on the second left. Seemed to be very nice. You will love Adare, very nice town. Your trip sounds very good. We always stay at self catering places, so it will be nice to hear your impressions. Youngka
Michele, Is the place in Clifden: Mitchell's, the very nice place in the Hotel across the street from the Market? We really liked their food twice while there.

youngka,

Mitchell's is a stand alone restaurant, not connected with a hotel. The food and service is outstanding. Last time I was there they had an early bird menu.

RE: Restaurants and Pubs TIME IS GETTING SHORT

I want to thank everyone who responded to my original post for recommendations of restaurants and pubs for our upcoming trip to Ireland.  I have compiled the list and we hope to visit many of them.

If anyone else would still like to chime in, that would be GREAT.  We are leaving a week from this Friday!!!!

Denny,

We are always happy to help around here. I'm glad you have your list of restaurants. You must be getting really excited and counting down the days.

Will you let us know how it goes when you get back? We would love to hear about your self-catering and the restaurants that you liked.

Have a wonderful trip. Bon voyage!

Michele,
Thanks so much for your kind words.  Yes we are getting anxious for our trip.  It has been so hot here at home.  Near 100 degree F for the last several days.  We look forward to the cooler weather - hopefully not too much rain though.

It is really hot in Hotlanta now too. I am dreaming about cool, rainy Ireland. Enjoy!
