Traversing the West Coast Q

Hello Michele,

I'm a bit lost right now in my situation. In a couple of weeks I will be backpacking all over Europe, Ireland is the only place that I am having trouble preparing. My plan is to arrive in Dublin and spend a few nights there. The two other places I want to see the most are the Cliffs of Moher and Dingle, on a small budget with a short amount of time. Anyways, I was thinking about either flying or taking the Eireann bus to Galway, stay in Galway overnight, and this is where it gets tricky. The following night I would like to be staying in Dingle if possible. So, to visit the CLiffs of Moher on the way, I cant find a suitable travel plan. The tour buses would be nice but I would lose hours returning to Galway and then repeating my Southbound journey to Dingle. Of course if there was a tour bus that went between say Galway and Limerick with a stop a Moher on the way, that would be perfect but I dont think they exist.
So, I was wondering if the Eireann buses stop at the Cliffs of Moher with the possibility of picking up one of the next buses in the same direction to continue down to Dingle somehow. And I was wondering if navigating this somewhat complex bus route is possible. I also notice the shannon ferry link but I dont know if this is a time saver when considering in the waiting times for the ferry and the following Eireann bus. Driving would be an easy solution but I'm only a student and travelling alone is impossible to afford a car. If I could somehow travel form Galway to the cliffs of moher to dingle in the same day while hopefully travelling in the general direction instead of backtracking and redeparting that would be perfect. Any suggestions? I have read up on the Eireann bus system but without experience, it can be hard to tell if it's plausible.

Thank you
Patrick

Patrick,

Many of the Backpackers who visit Ireland utilize Paddy Wagon Tours. It might work out well for you. They offer a Jump - on/off tour that allows you to spend several days in certain areas. They have their own hostel system which is well run and does include a breakfast for each day. They will help you line up these hostels, if you take the Jump-on/off tour. If you choose one of their package tours, which are very economical and a lot of fun, your hostel and activities are included in the price.

Otherwise, there will be a lot of bus time. A good friend was working at a hostel on Inis Mor. She decided to come over to visit with us in Doolin. Had the weather been good, she could have taken the ferry. As it was, she ended up taking a circuitous route from Inis Mor to Rossaveal, Rossaveal to Galway, Galway down into Doolin. What might have been a one hour ferry ride ended up taking her six hours. weirdfaceBus travel is feasible and certainly many people do rely on it. Just bear in mind that you will get no where quickly and you will not see as much as you would like. Whilst Galway to Dingle in one day via bus is certainly doable, you are looking at transfers and a lot of bus time.

Patrick,

Welcome to my forum! As Bit has explained any time you take public transportation it is cumbersome and takes a long time to travel to most places. If you have limited time perhaps you shoud skip Dingle and just do a day tour to the cliffs from Galway. How much actual time do you have in Ireland?
