Another Itinerary

Hello yet again Michele!

Although our potential traveling companions have not officially bowed out, I convinced myself to focus my trip planning on what Bill and I would like to see/do without anyone else aboard.  I think this is a pretty workable itinerary until we get to the end of the trip.  You'll see that I have some questions about traveling to Portmagee to catch a boat to the Skelligs.  This is the kind of adventure I think we'd both really enjoy (but obviously dependent on the weather).  I could probably skip Cahir but I've only seen Cashel lit up at night and think I'd like to actually tour the place.  I'm not sure if there's a good place to stay maybe near Tipperary or if we may as well go all the way back to Bunratty.  Can you help me out here?

May 22:                Fly out of Michigan on to Shannon by early morning.

May 23 - 24:        Pick up rental car. Head to Ennis and the Fleadh Nua Festival.  Staying at the Temple Gate Hotel.  Reservations made.  Enjoy the sights and sounds of the festival for the next two days or check out the Craggaunowen Project part of Day Two .  Recover from flight and practice left-hand driving. J

May 25th:             Leave Ennis and head to the Cliffs of Moher.  Tour the Burren area during the morning (depending on the weather) and then north toward Galway.  Arrive in Oughterard.  Waterfall Lodge by late afternoon.  Have not made reservations yet.  Suggestions welcomed.  Basing here 3 nights.

May 26th:             Head to Maam Cross, Lenane, Killary Harbor, Clifden, Kylemore Abbey, Roundstone and whatever fits comfortably in the day.   We are very flexible travelers.  If we dont see it all at least were in Ireland!

May 27th:             Head to Cong and then north to the Westport area; perhaps as far as to Achill Island.  Explore at a comfortable pace.

May 28th:         Leave Oughterard.   Head south to the Dingle Peninsula via whatever we may have missed in the Cliffs of Moher area if the weather was bad on the 25th.  Travel the coastline and take the ferry  at Killimer.  Stay at the Emagh Lodge.

May 29th:             Do the Rick Steeves tour; meander.

May 30th:             We're considering the drive to Portmagee to catch a boat to the Skellig Islands (on shore visit).  Not certain if returning to Dingle the same day would be advisable or not.  Im not all that interested in the ROC other than as a means to get to the Skelligs.  If not Dingle, then perhaps stay in Kenmare or Bantry area for a night or two.  Suggestions?

June 1st:               Head to Cahir/Cashel with the intention of staying the last night closer to Shannon Airport ( Bunratty Lodge) prior to flying home on the 2nd.

My original plan was to fly home on the 3rd so I could add a day back to the Dingle Peninsula.  If we did stay in Bantry perhaps we could take in Skibbereen Heritage Center one day?

One of these days this will all come together...

Kelly,

I think you are wise to concentrate on what you and your husband prefer to do. After all you don't know if the others will actually be joining you. It sounds like a good trip. However, I would not try to do Skellig Michael from Dingle. The boats that actually land on the island leave pretty early in the morning. Better to be at your destination already. Then all you have to do is have breakfast and go.

Kenmare or Killarney would be good bases for the SW.

Would you be spending a night in Cashel/Cahir or just driving through on your last day?

Michele

Thanks Michele, I'm so much more at peace just going forward for the two of us, rather than thinking about a first time visit for another couple.
I'd prefer to spend the last two nights in the same place, I just haven't settled on where that will be yet. Perhaps somewhere close enough to Cahir and Cashel; as well as reasonable distance to catch the flight home in the early afternoon? I really don't like the idea of "driving through" Cahir and Cashel on the last day, but I would consider spending one night there, and the last night perhaps at Bunratty. I just don't have a clear sense of the end of the trip as yet.

Kelly,

Drive time from Cashel to Shannon is perhaps 1-1/2 to 2 hours. I have a recommendation for a very nice B&B in Dundrum, which is a bit closer to Shannon but not too far from Cashel.

I think we'll go for two nights at Joy's. I had already checked out your review of her facility. That way if we're rushed for time the day before, we can hop back to Cahir for the castle after we tour the Rock.

Also - our friends officially dropped out this weekend. I'm so glad we avoided any conflict. Thanks for you moral support on that front!

Kelly,

You can't go wrong with Joy's Rockside House. FYI, their last name is Joy. First names are Joan and Rem. Glad to hear all is well with your friendship.
