My mom sent me an article on Irish Travel from the Detroit Free Press. Guess which site they reference for its fine list of castle stays??? Well, IrelandYes.com of course.
Unfortunately, they require a subscription to read the article (what sites are still trying to do that?!!?)
I emailed the author Ellen Creager to thank her for the mention and she replied saying I had a good website.
It comes as I am upadting my Castle Hotels page (to be online in a few days). Lots of new castles this year. I enjoy going to look at them, even if they are too expensive for me to stay at myself! I must stretch my dollars to cover as much of Ireland as I can. Spending a couple of months a year in Ireland is not cheap, as you well know Corey.
Glad to see they have a free link...when I tried to find it, with a search from their website, they asked me to pay for a subscription. Looks like they have a few ways to get at their articles.
That article and her accompanying article "The Jig is Up" does a good job of talking about the increasing prices in Ireland without striking financial panic. Yes, it's more expensive than five years ago, but you will still get a good experience...and you can find ways to save some euros.
I enjoyed the articles too. I'm not complaining about the prices in Ireland. I just roll with the punches. After over 35 years of travel to Ireland, I have seen it all. And I know how to stretch my money. By not staying at castle hotels.
On my first trip to Ireland B&B was 1.50 pounds. You could get a feast of a meal for the same price. A pint of Guinness was 18 pence. Petrol was 39 pence an imperial gallon (actually more than an American gallon!). A castle banquet cost 4 pounds. I could have bought a cottage in Dingle with farmland for 500 pounds.
But everything is relative. Incomes were far less then so it probably equates to the same amount if I had the time to sit down and figure it out.
