With Michele's expertise I have the PERFECT itinerary. I know what I'm doing and when. One minor detail that I left out was purchasing Euros. I went to a Bank of America today and it would take them three days to get the Euros in, which is the day I fly out of Boston. I don't have Triple A, neither do my parents (my travel companions). Can you please tell me what I should/can do? I want at least 2K of US dollars in Euros. Can I buy Euros in Ireland??? I'm leaving Monday and flying from Boston to Dublin.
You can easily get Euros from an ATM at the airport. Using a credit or debit card for a cash machine is the easiest way to change money. Almost every town in Ireland will have ATM's. Only the tiniest village would not have them.
Of course, you can also change US dollars for Euros at a bank as well.
I know my parents have an ATM card, but I don't. I will need to take my cash to a bank and exchange it for Euros, which I'm hoping is easy. My parents have a debit card, and we can travel on that to get us going! TY.
Just about every bank also has a Bureau de Change, so you can stop in during normal bank hours to exchange dollars for euros. There are other exchange places that usually have higher fees than banks, but they will all get you some euros in hand.
The ATM has been the easiest for me, just make sure your bank/credit card company knows you'll be traveling abroad and that you know your daily withdrawal limit. If it's $100 or $200, you'll want it increased.
Just returned from Ireland on the 23rd and no problem with obtaining Euros at ATM. Did not take any US money with me. I withdrew 600 Euros from ATM in grocery store in one town when we were traveling around.
I also took my husband's ATM card just for insurance and did use it one day when I withdrew the max on my card and then turned around and did the same with his. Same account, different cards. If I remember correctly, this was when I wanted to pay cash to the B&B for 3 nights' stay so needed quite a lot. And then there was the shopping....and eating....
Have your parents try to use ATMs connected with banks if possible. Some of the stand-alones in c-stores or such will charge a fee, while the bank ones don't.
If you use a credit card to obtain cash you will pay horrendous fees and interest.
We also had two cards, same account, in case something happens to one of the cards we are still OK. Had the bank set each card at $1500.00 US for ATM withdrawal and $5000.00 US for Debit in case we made a purchase using debit instead of credit. Really did not ever intend to use the debit for purchases because I wanted to use credit card for purchases.
I found that using ATM cards to obtain money in Ireland is the simplest thing you can do in Ireland.
