I really enjoy this forum and hope it can help with my itinerary.
My family & I have booked flights to Ireland for April 8 -19 2009. We arrive & depart Shannon. My biggest concern is that we will be ther for Easter. I know that Good Friday is a day that many places are closed, as is Easter Monday. This has a lot to do with our itinerary choices.
Here goes: Wed. April 8 Depart JFK
Thurs. April 9 arrive Shannon 5:45 AM pick up rental car. We probably won't be able to check in to a B&B this early, so if the weather is good we'll head to the Cliffs of Moher and or the Burren. If the weather is bad ???? We hope to check in & take a nap early in the afternoon. Several people have suggested staying near Bunratty and going to the Traditional Irish Night at the FOlk Park that night if we can handle it.
Fri April 10 (Good Friday) Head to Blarney & Blarney Woolen Mills Hotel. (2 nights) I think we need to stay at a hotel because it is Good Friday and many restaurants etc are closed. Either visit Blarney Castle (according to their website they are open) or drive on to Cobh. Dinner at the hotel.
Sat April 11 either Cobh or Blarney Castle etc whichever wasn't done Friday.
Sunday April 12 (Easter Sunday) Depart for Killarney after Easter Mass.(2 night stay) My husband would like to drive parat of the Ring of Kerry but not all of it.
Monday April 13 Gap of Dunloe Our only concern is what to do if the weather is bad while in Killarney.
Tuesday April 14 Leave Killarney and go to Waterford. Visit Waterford City Overnight near Kilmacthomas (not sure where, but plan to meet up with some friends) Recommendations are welcome.
Wed. April 15 Head to Dublin. Spend 2 days and nights there seeing the major sights.
Thurs April 16 Dublin
Friday April 17 - leave Dublin and head to Westport. I know this is quite a long ride. Visit Cong area as well. Overnight Westport
Sat April 18. Leave Westport and go to Galway Overnight somewhere in Galway. This is our last night.
Sunday April 19 Head to Shannon Airport for 1:30 PM flight
Any suggestions for B&B's and what not to miss would be appreciated. THis is in the roking stages yet, but I hope it is a good start.
Not a bad start to your planning. Personally, I prefer to be closer to the airport even with a 1:30 departure. By the time you finish breakfast and your packing it will be time to drop off your rental car and do the airport thing.
You might consider Irish Night on your last night instead of first and overnighting in Bunratty. Maybe reverse the order of your trip?
Play around with it a little and see what you can come up with.
For Good Friday staying in a B&B is fine as long as you make dinner reservations at a hotel.
