Cliffs of Moher vs. Loop Head

Hi,

I have been reading, and as I research our (loose still) itinerary, I learn of new places and more I want to see!

We rearranged our original plans to get to the Cliffs of Moher, and have read of the cool Visitor's Center there.

As I've read more, I've discovered Loop Head.

Would you suggest the Cliffs of Moher, or foregoing that to fit in Loop Head and later Slea Head Drive & the Blasket Islands?

With the time we have there, it's pretty much a one or the other. We might be able to do the Cliffs & Slea Head Drive on 2 different days, but if you think Loop Head would give us a similar experience as the Cliffs and adding in the Blasket Islands is worth it, I'd be interested to hear!

Thank you,

~Tonya

Tonya,

The Cliffs of Moher and Loop Head are two very different experiences. the Cliffs of Moher are very commercialized and crowded. Since it is one of Ireland's top attractions you will find a lot of people from all over the world there. On a clear day the views are spectacular. It is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.

Loop Head is much more off the beaten tourist track. Although the cliffs are not as high the drive down (Bridges of Ross, etc.) it is very scenic and beautiful. Without the tourist crowds it has a much different atmosphere. There is a lighthouse and the headland is not barricaded as are the Cliffs of Moher. If you have small children you must attend to them carefully. Loop Head has an otherworldly edge of the world atmosphere. It feels that you have reached the end of land and all that is before you is ocean. There is lots of grass and on a nice day spreading out a blanket for a picnic would be perfect.

Without knowing the time of year you are visiting Ireland, your starting and ending point for that day or your schedule it would be impossible to know if you could fit both into your day. Perhaps you would care to share some more info with me?

Michele
