Another question: what's the best way to "pay as we go" while in Ireland: Euros, MasterCard, traveler's checks, ...? I plan to ask each B&B proprietor how she/he wishes to be paid prior to departure, but Michael was asking about the other stuff -- dinners out, stops at pubs, shopping, etc.
When I travel in Ireland I use my credit card wherever possible. I have Capital One, which does not add a "foreign transaction fee". Many B&Bs will take your cc # for reservations but require cash as payment. You will inquire in advance to see which ones want that. A few B&Bs will accept cc payments. Some add a certain percentage to use it. Check that in advance.
Restaurants, petrol, many pubs that serve meals, shops, etc. accept cc. For admissions to sightseeing you will want cash on hand, although a few places like Cliffs of Moher will accept cc.
Traveler's checks are stone age technology. Some people take them with for emergency back up. I haven't taken them for several years and have had no problems using cc and ATM card for getting cash.
I've also checked with (and heard back from) all three of our hosts regarding how they wish to be paid at check-out. And by the way, it was my husband who was asking about travelers checks -- when it comes to money, he does most certainly live in the stone age. I only recently talked him into getting a debit card!
Michele, just wanted to let you know that Annette at The Shores must be the nicest woman on the planet. She is helping me arrange a golf game for Michael at the local club with one of the members -- as my anniversary surprise for him. If it works out, he'll be in hog heaven. And even if it doesn't, everyone should know that Annette goes waaaaaaaaay beyond the call of duty as hostess at The Shores.
I agree with you completely. Annette is terrific. I really don't know how she manages to run a top-notch B&B, cook gourmet dinners and breakfasts, raise a family and attend to a farm all at the same time. She is a dynamo.
Please know that this comes under the heading of "checking in" rather than "badgering" -- but we leave one month from today (Yahoo!), and I'm looking forward to receiving your written help with driving directions. Thanks!
Glad the map arrived. Someone once asked me to highlight their map in yellow. I refused. As you can see yellow would never stand out on that map. I go with pink and a little orange instead. Have fun dreaming about your trip. Before you know it the dream will be reality!
